Jan 22 (Reuters) - E-commerce giant [Amazon.com](http://Amazon.com) is exiting its operations in the Canadian province of Quebec, leading to the loss of about 1,700 full-time jobs, the company said on Wednesday, prompting Ottawa to express its unhappiness.

Using 3rd party delivery service, ok, maybe that’s a savings, but closing a warehouse and possibly making delivery times higher, and possibly making shipping costs higher does not seem like a long term savings, but just guessing here.
IMO, seems like a lot to avoid unions.

While I understand the impulse for unions - from my understanding - they operate like legal mafias and increase costs tremendously often with measures that are a heavy drag on any operation.

Quebec is a tough place to do business, with or without unions.
Canada is a tough place to do business, a relatively small population in a large country. Many Canadians live close to the US border and choose to buy on [Amazon.com](http://Amazon.com) and have their deliveries made to locations on the US side of the border.
Canadian currency is weaker than usual against the US dollar making it tougher to sell imported goods in Canada.
I don’t think I need to go on about other economic issues.
A union which is worth anything would be trying to remedy the poor position the Canadian workers are in, Amazon would be working on reducing its costs to offset the pressures on buyers which is impacting Amazon.
This decision would certainly have been among the few paths available to Amazon in Canada.
I am sorry for the workers who are losing their jobs. Maybe they will be rehired after the next Canadian election.
