[Ars Tech] FTC prepares “the big one,” a major lawsuit targeting Amazon’s core business

Someone who responded to the ASF post was kind enough to point me this direction. I appreciate how welcoming this community is. There’s a lot of angry people in ASF - with too much time on their hands.

It is funny, most of us who are here were accused of being the angry ones!

Welcome!

Indeed.

Sad it is that far too-many of us allow Emotion to overwhelm Reason, and thereby dismiss another’s position out of hand.

As for me and my house, we’ll remember the lesson learned at our sainted elder’s knees when we were but wet-behind-the-ears whippersnappers:

The First Step To Freeing The Mind Is To Open It.

You are a bully just for saying that.

The hard part is either not opening it enough, or opening it too much, and letting everything fall out.

Or letting EVERYTHING fall in.

Hence the multiplicity of Primrose Paths, leading up to the boundaries of the Circle of Life and right over them into the abyss, dadgummit.

Well, for better or worse, I told you that it would be ‘difficult’ to deal with it on Amazon since the DM was junked and gave a fairly direct ‘hint’ about where you MIGHT have better success with an open discussion.

Time will tell if I should break my arm by patting myself on the back or not!:grin::grin::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

And thanks for that! I can’t promise that I won’t poke the bear occasionally on ASF.

One quick question for verification on a UK issue I’m working on - does anyone know whether a “vendor” field exists in SellerCentral or in the template spreadsheet (if there is one??) that sellers may use to upload SKUs? I haven’t been able to find any such field in the US or UK, but I’ve never used a spreadsheet to upload inventory, so I’m not sure whether it exists there. Similarly, I try to avoid misstatements as much as possible.

That’s my secret, I’m always angry.

For anyone continuing to follow this, I published a Substack yesterday covering Amazon financials and the predatory pricing business model. I expect predatory pricing to be one of the focal points of the FTC filing. Here’s the link.

Will read in a bit. Thanks!

As one who bought Amazon at $86 in Dec, and then sold at $130 a mere 6 months later in July, I await the Anti-trust suit with glee, as it will cause some to panic, and the recovery will be just as rapid, as investors realize that those “prime” members are really loyal about paying that $144 per year subscription for free shipping and TV series that all get cancelled after their 1st seasons.

But I so dislike paying short-term capital gains taxes…

I didn’t understand everything, but I understood this:

I’m not sure another example exists of a retailer operating at a gross loss for more than a few months. Amazon can only afford to do this by charging ever more fees to third-party sellers and customers of AWS. Where advertising on Amazon barely existed a few years ago, and virtually every search result was organic, it now accounts for almost $38 billion in revenue, generating more ad revenue than any traditional media company or the entire global newspaper industry
