Andy’s job is to manage a cash cow, it is not to manage growth. He is the CEO because he was the only top manager at Amazon who was willing to manage a cash cow.
He is taking the necessary steps to manage a cash cow and is implementing them exceptionally well. This cow will give milk for a long time thanks to Andy’s changes.
Some people will enjoy working for a cash cow, others will move on to an organization which is trying to grow. Those who move on will not be missed, and might actually benefit the cash cow by leaving and reducing cost by their absence.
No one at Amazon is going to announce what stage in a company life cycle it is at because that might affect the price of the stock.

This happens in large corporate cultures, I think the only thing that saves them is the silo system, keeping them from killing each other. I see it serving on boards of government entities too.
It even happens in small - medium corporations. I have never seen it in a small to very small corporations that I have run. Talking about the one I have run for 36 years. The only exception is our vacation and time off policy, it is paid and unlimited. Sometimes team members get irritated since, when the other members are out we all have to pick up the slack.
I did see the backstabbers and other toxic issues in my last real job, now quite some time ago. A small corporation with less than 400 employees, in the end I had more than half reporting to me.
The turnaround president asked for one thing “loyalty” he leed from the top. His direct reports understood. He called me the Tidy Bowl man and assigned me those that needed guidance.
I remember one meeting, not happy about what a employee was presenting, he wrote on his pad “Smoke Him” folded it and passed it to me right in front of him. ![]()
