Delivery companies are slowly moving toward the use of drones. When they get all the bugs out ( not hitting dogs or dropping packages in pools ) they may do most deliveries that way.
In the long run, it should be cheaper.

I’m considering a drone landing pad. It would be just outside a second-floor window ( the ultimate porch pirate defense ).

Anyone else looking forward to having their own drone landing pad?

This would be on a wooden platform, not grass.

Only if it’s perfectly level. If not, it must be redone.

We like level heli / drone pads, and green pools…

lol and SMH

I am thinking something more like a bear trap mounted on a wooden platform, so the kids don’t get into it… Then having the “D” in the center of the trap. Wonder if I could sell that on Amazon?

_After all, I can not sell my made from wood and hand wrought steel A-Frames on Amazon any longer. I have to provide them the certificates for button battery use. They are wood and steel A-Frame signs to hold signs you insert, no batteries needed. 🤕_

I wonder what the cost of an attractive nuisance-coverage policy for such might run?

We would need one of those 10’ x 10’ dog kennels around that. Partly for the stray dogs. Partly for the stray cats. Partly for the stray humans. But mainly to keep the wind from sending the packages to Oklahoma (we’re in the panhandle of Texas).

The amazon smile electric van has a hard enough time delivering to the same spot at the house. Poor drones gonna make great targets for the yokels out here.

There is no stopping it. Nothing can withstand the force of how bad Oklahoma sucks.

I live in a 33 story building in Manhattan. Would a drone landing pad be installed on our roof or in our front or back garden?

Our building receives hundreds of packages a day, and has had to expand the package room in the basement, and the package room staff, quite considerably in the past few years.

For those of you who know about drones: What is the maximum weight a drone can deliver?

Do drones deliver packages in the rain or snow?

There is no clear dividing line between toy drones, package-carrying drones, or passenger-carrying drones. If you want a larger payload, you use larger motors & props.

This is a Joby air taxi. It carries five plus luggage.

It can probably land on your building’s roof.

Yes there is.
0.55lb and 55lbs is a delineation by the FAA for licensing and pilot qualifications on top of operations over populations/buildings/vehicles and drone registration. Carrying people gets into all other manner of certifications and airfield requirements. What you are flying and where you are flying it also has rules regardless of weight.

Many toy makers and commercial drone manufacturers like DJI, try and stay under the FAA requirements to keep themselves out of trouble for the various categories of drones.

Currently there are a few certified drone manufacturers like Zipline which has about an 8lb payload. It weighs about 55lbs loaded.

There is the DJI Agras at a whopping 350+lbs but it is only for agricultural use spraying and seeding, etc. and requires specific pilot line of sight and certification requirements. Saw one a couple of months ago. Its a monster.

Yes, obviously with limitations on visibility, icing, winds, and snow/water accumulation at takeoff and landing sites.

Saw this for decades in “Undisclosed location in Southwest Asia” 🤣

Great pic! So why are drones better for deliveries than trucks or bicycles, and truck/bicycle combos, all of which are used for deliveries in NYC?

No traffic to deal with, no employee to pay to drive there, shorter distance, faster delivery. I would lean heavily on the no employee to pay. The DJI and Zipline can be flown by an operator, but they are designed to fly and spray/deliver without operator actions.
Here is a short youtube video on the aerial sprayer. Notice the flight is pre planned and not flown by an operator. The operator I saw at the farm demo in Turlock Ca, only changed the battery and filled the tank and pushed the takeoff button. The drone went around the field all on its own and landed.

I saw an Amazon drone delivery a package yesterday.
It is loud. Not as loud as a helicopter trying to land on your house, but you definitely know it’s flying overhead.
It dropped a box half a shoebox size on the lawn of a house across the street from where I was walking, then the downdraft from the drone pushed the (apparently quite light) box off the lawn onto the sidewalk. Some kids ran over and picked it up. I do not know if it was their package or not. They were enthusiastic about the drone delivery though.
