[eCommerce Bytes] USPS Discontinues 1st Class Package Service and Announces Grace Period

So FCPS and Parcel Select are going away on July 9th, and becoming “Ground Advantage.” Ok, that works.

Yesterday USPS announced that there will be a grace period where they would still accept FCPS and PS packages without penalty until Sept 30th. Good move on their part.

That really doesn’t make sense unless they didn’t get the info out to the partner systems (like Stamps, Priateship, etc… ) in time to make the coding change.

Like who pre-prints labels out 2 and half months in advance for packages?

Thinking out loud, USPS return labels?

Valid thought … returns are not something we generally have to deal with (custom products) so that did not cross our mind … :+1:

Honestly just a guess, that’s the only thing I can think of postage wise.

I know I have something here in the house that comes with a pre-paid label, and I believe it’s FCPS.

Yeah which one of us has not gotten a return 6 months or more after the request was made?
My record is a year later. Of course Amazon still did a RFS on it.

Does anyone have a link to the price rates for Ground Advantage? We have tried looking all over USPS, but cannot find anything that is clearly defined. Just % increases.

No, this was perfect! You’re second post is what I found on the commercial tab for GA. Just took some scrolling in the file to find it.

Do you (or anyone?) have any idea what Parcel Select Destination Entry or Parcel Select Lightweight are?

image

Those tabs have some interesting prices, but I don’t really understand what they’re saying.

Never used it, but here is what I could find. From what I am gathering, these would be the charges to UPS or FedEx for dropping off their package to the postal service for last mile delivery?? Maybe??

What is parcel select destination entry?
https://about.usps.com/postal-bulletin/2007/html/pb22219/kit2_003.html

“Parcel Select” is the registered trademark name for the Postal Service’s economical ground delivery service for packages entered in bulk, including those entered at destination facilities. It is designed for and generally used by large- and medium-sized parcel shippers.

What is parcel select lightweight class of mail?
https://postalpro.usps.com/sku/2019/Parcel%20Select

Parcel Select Lightweight is specifically intended for packages that weigh less than a single pound, packages that are used for order fulfillments, and packages that are already pre-sorted and ready to enter into the USPS logistical mail stream at either a DDU, SCF, or NDC designated mail entry point.

Some retailers automatically send return labels with the initial order. LL Bean comes to mind, though they send UPS labels.
Perhaps there are some retailers that send USPS labels with smaller items?

Returns makes sense. I ordered a small clock from Walmart yesterday and it came broken.

Walmart gave me a first class mail shipping label to send it back, and my shipping deadline is July 30th so it makes sense.

Walmart probably can’t buy a ground advantage label for a return till July 9th.

Probably makes it easier to just give a grace period then to go clawback $ from for a higher shipping rate if I didn’t mail it back till after July 9th. I could see extra headaches all around.

Or someone’s done the math and realizes they would have to issue refunds instead of clawbacks depending on prices and weights and stuff? Who really knows :joy:
