More like the take is on, which leads to –

““We, the unwilling, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have done so much, for so long, with so little, we are now qualified to do anything with nothing.”

― Konstantin Josef Jireček

And we can’t blame any of it on a ‘lack of leadership’ because THAT would have actually required having some ‘leadership’ at some point in time. And it has been decades since we have had any.

Electric vehicles aren’t sustainable, they are actually more expensive and have little effect on the environment due to energy consumption.
Just showing jumping on the bandwagon isn’t a good idea

Most of those claims have either been debunked or shown to be exaggerated to allow for a straw man or red herring arguement for a political point or industry agenda. The science is clear, the economics/politics are not thanks to subsidies.
Now that we have had the cars for a while, we have established battery recycling industries, another concern that vanished a few years after EV’s became popular, negating most of that straw man.
