Import Tariffs Part Deux - 05302025

This will be interesting to hear because it really depends on which Emergency the administration tries to enact tariffs. There have been a considerable number of Emergencies declared.

Relevant, I think.

:woman_facepalming: Well $#@!

That might have gotten me to attend.

I am feeling a direct effect of tariffs. I have only one store left to buy my imported French Brioche Bread at. All of the others which were carrying it apparently have decided it is priced to high to sell. $9 per loaf feels a bit excessive, but my wife really prefers it.

In that case, scrub the confession from SAS!

Too late. Once it’s ‘clouded’ it’s out there forever. The NSA and several global ‘agencies’ are preparing to go through all your dirty laundry. Get some Tide Pods for clean up…

 Ok but will they wash, dry, fold, and put away? I might volunteer to be scrutinized!

(LOL just kidding, I rebuke illegal searches)

a new wave of tariffs on Thursday, including a 100% levy on imported branded drugs, unless a firm is building a manufacturing plant in the US. Washington will also impose a 25% tariff on imports of all heavy-duty trucks and 50% levies on kitchen and bathroom cabinets…the US would start charging a 30% tariff on upholstered furniture from next week.

Not really a Seller question, but do the cabinets and furniture include IKEA?:downcast_face_with_sweat:

Whew … still have time to buy a wooden rocker …

In other news…..

It surely sounds like “growth” when you only look at the nominal spending…
Tariff-induced price increases can create a statistical bump in spending, even though it’s not a real increase in economic welfare…

Since our business is based on imports, we have increased our prices by around 15%, and almost every competitor on the listings has followed suit. People are just being forced to pay more for the same things…

Don’t they use IKEA assembly punitively in Guantanamo?

Yes

Furniture prices spiked 4.7 percent last month in comparison to August 2024, CNN reported, citing Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Living room and dining room furniture rose by 9.5 percent, it added.

In the end, these deals are just a tariff to the consumers. Trump’s TikTok deal terms called a ‘shakedown ’ by experts : NPR

Update on my brioche bread. Supermarket has found a replacement brand - baked in the USA. Not as good as the French import, as good or better than the Canadian import.

Cheaper than either imports.

How often is this BLS statistic revised after a few months?

Check the ones at Cracker Barrel (new or old store design) since they may be looking for sales…

So that is like buying a French Cheese, like Roquefort that is not Roquefort, and not as good as Roquefort, but is cheaper, because it is not Roquefort, nor does it come from Roquefort, but it is good or better than Canada.

Oh My, the tariffs are working.

Yup

The source is less important than the taste. A difference between consumption and conspicuous consumption.

Gave up paying the premium prices associated with Swiss Emmentaler long ago, substituted a French Emmentaler until recently, and now am eating Wisconsin Swiss.

I can afford any cheese I want to buy, but there is not enough value in the higher priced product to motivate me to buy.

The efforts of various regions in some countries to protect their agricultural products by treating the name of their region as a trademark is ineffective with some buyers. They aren’t good enough or different enough from the alternatives to justify the cost.

Buying something bad because of price is not the same as deciding what is good enough, and buying based on value as you see it.

There are a lot of American who buy based on other people’s opinions. Others who buy based on price. There are even, probably a minority, who buy on the basis of value. And value is often subjective.

You have the privilege of being able to scale back to less costly options. There are others at the bottom rungs who are already scrimping and saving and spending only when necessary. They aren’t buying stuff for the brand name. What do they do when the bottom-dollar stuff go up in price?
