NSFE Debbie's back

NSFE Tax & 1099-K Questions

Debby is back giving bad advice. I think it a bit telling when someone repeatedly refers to complying with legal requirements as a “game”.

Amazon plays a game where their report the entire gross amount they collect on your sales but do not deduct all their fees and “taxes”, etc.

She even went on to repeat her “advice” that we should send 1099 forms to Amazon. At least she told OP to get an accountant; let’s hope they find one better than the one she uses.

I would hazard a guess that she did her shopping for an “accountant” based not on their qualifications or adherence to the law, but which one was willing to give the answer she wanted, and accept whatever absurd deductions she wants to come up with.

I’m surprised that she hasn’t responded yet to my post pointing out that I’m “not an expert” (which I’m not; but nor is she).

This is what happens when you let people who are convicted felons give tax advice.

Hey, I’m just happy that AMZ magically works out the correct sales tax, and saves me the trouble!

No doubt. Tax was a PITA previously; now it’s easy enough that the SO handles it all and I don’t have to get involved.

Sales tax is literally the only thing amazon has implemented seamlessly ever!

Well, there were pretty strict laws and regulations as to how they had to do it; when the legal department gets involved, Amazon makes sure to take no chances.

I don’t think they do really.

I think that what has happened is that the states are all so thrilled with the HUGE boost in tax revenue that they gave Amazon pretty much carte blanche.

Just looking at California , it’s not right as they aren’t supposed to tax shipping unless it is clearly labelled shipping and handling. I would not be at all surprised to learn that every single sales-tax state has many instances of the little trickier rules not being followed correctly.

But since the states make the rules I think they just decided that as long as their coffers are being filled with no effort on their part – We’re Good!
