Target says it will close nine stores in major cities across four states...

We found since we paid the mob our monthly protection fee, we have not had any shoplifting issues…

Target has been trying to open a store in the old Sears building for 5 years by me but town red-tape has slowed them down so much that pretty much every store in that strip mall has left. It’s a ghost town.

“The Paper Store” moved in and took the old Modell’s spot. Has anyone ever been in “The Paper Store”? I haven’t yet but my daughter was in it last week and they don’t sell paper… lol

I imagine opening that kind of store next to a soon to be open 3-Story Target was a mistake…

As far as staying on topic here - any comment of mine probably will be frowned upon and considered political. Everyone really needs to take a step back, drop political feelings and beliefs just for a few moments and just open their eyes. This goes both ways BTW…

There is probably a little bit of “truth” in everything and yes the challenge is to not overemphasize nor over downplay that there are things happening. Not everything is happening everywhere but something is happening somewhere.

It is a confluence of dozens of streams that make a river. If you live above the source you see no water. If you live in a van down by the river that is all you see. There is a lot of in-between.

What’s that fable about the blind men and the elephant?

Unlike Target, Walgreens, Walmart, we on SAS are not going to “both sides” the data that demonstrate that their stated-out-loud reasons for closing stores are bunk.

No one is saying that shoplifting doesn’t occur or that it isn’t a problem for retailers, or that some stores are not more prone to shrink than some other stores for varied reasons.

Replies here are calling BS on:

  1. corporate claims that “increases” in “organized shoplifting” is a factor in why they are closing multiple stores and their efforts to scapegoat a very limited phenomenon for their own (bad) business choices through a false narrative–no matter how popular that narrative might be;
  2. any attempted scapegoating of “ecommerce” for b&m retail shrink (just because a thief sells something on eBay doesn’t make ecom into Oogie Boogie); and
  3. factual misrepresentations of phenomena that are not only not backed up by facts but are in fact disproven by facts, no matter what propagandist stereotypes those misrepresentations might play upon.

I think they should convert old Sears’ to The Container Store. I think the business model is perfect. Sell organization supplies, then hire people with OCD to work there to ensure maximum productivity of the workers.

The building itself was ancient and had to be essentially be rebuilt from the inside out.

The issue with this whole thing is that Starbucks and Walgreens I believe (or another drug store) were going to split the basement level and then pulled out, leaving it all for Target.

That caused a change of building plans and stopped the construction for almost 3 years. Not sure why people were fighting this. I guess they wanted to see all the businesses leave and stare at dilapidated buildings for the rest of their lives.

We have a vacant sears here as well. Last plan was supposed to be a tear down and put up 300 apartments an an Aldi”s but they needed to do a “2 year traffic study”. It’s almost been 2 years and I still have no idea of the outcome. I know all the other affordable housing projects in this city don’t get approval because “nimby issues” (not in my back yard). No matter what they put there will create “too much traffic” and would not surprise me if it sits vacant for the next decade. Everyone constantly complains about the homeless it attracts but also complains about any solution anyone comes up with :woman_facepalming:

This topic was at best, very loosely related to online selling and the conversation did not stay related to the purpose of this forum so I have chosen to close it.

The purpose of this forum is to help each other with marketplace problems, not discuss/debate/argue social issues. Message me directly if you have a concern about me closing this thread and I will be happy to explain my decision.

I regret my attempts at humor, when I should have shut this down earlier. Lesson learned.
