Why do people keep saying Amazon does not accept debit cards as a charge card?

Yup Yup Yup

I have been using a debit card on my seller account forever. But I still chime in on all those threads and tell them to use a credit card – not debit – credit. I don’t know how many times I’ve typed that. And I am sure it works (if they have one that is).

My being grandfathered in may be a big part of the acceptance. Perhaps how much I buy on Amazon may even be a factor.

This makes sense. I had always understood the point of a credit card (vs. debit) is amazon wants and needs a way to get money out of the seller that goes rogue. And a bank account/debit is not a good way to do that. The rogue seller empties the account and runs away.

The credit card they can close, sure, but Amazon can still charge it and try to get the money from the issuing bank as a legit charge, based on your contract with them as a seller. They have a chance to recoup the losses with a credit card, far more than with a debit.

So…yeah but because credit cards are more likely to have turnover IRL, having a 2nd as a backup is a good idea.

Sweet, I haven’t seen one of these threads in a while.

I’m eagerly awaiting the OA/RA and spice grinders discussions that clearly will be coming soon.

…and how the FSD means you can sell anything you want, any time, any where, for any amount, per the Constitution :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Once a credit card account is closed the bank cannot and will not allow anybody to make additional charges to that card. Even if you contact the bank and tell them to block any future charges from Amazon as you are revoking their authorization to charge the card, they will put in a merchant block and any future charge attempts won’t be considered authorized.

A credit card is not a security deposit. It’s a payment method and you can revoke your authorization for a merchant to use that payment method at anytime. Not to mention, someone can request a very low credit limit (say, $200 or $500) so that any big charge attempts won’t go through regardless.

This also applies to bank accounts. You can write to the bank to block any potential withdrawals from the bank account by Amazon if you want to.

How can I stop a preauthorized debit?.

Also, will amazon try to debit your bank account anyway? As far as I know the bank account is provided to Amazon as a DEPOSIT method, and you never authorized them to withdraw money from it. I never read the fine print though.

I would recommend that you do before making statements like:

If you owe a debt they are coming after you, any way they can.

Yep, it does state they can debit your bank account in the BSA, and even reverse credits they sent (though ACH payments are not reversible once they are cleared which takes 1 - 2 business days)

It also says they have the right to pull credit reports on you.

The above is a misconception - Landlords ARE “granting credit” - landlords extend credit to a tenant in giving them possession of the landlord’s property for a promise to pay rent each month going forward.

This is very clearly “credit”, and timely rent payments are used by some forward-thinking services as a way of establishing better credit. (But the far easier way is [or was] to pay the rent with a points credit card, and let the credit card record, automatically reported, speak for itself) sadly, credit card points are worth less and less each year, so one should do the math to see if this tactic is still profitable as well as a way for a young person to build credit.

Strangely, the FICO credit score was only introduced in 1989. Before that, one could use things like a letter from one’s minister to get a house loan. I assumed an FHA mortgage for the first property I bought. This meant that I simply sent a letter to the bank holding the loan saying that I would “take over” the mortgage, and they had no choice but to accept that, as I had paid the prior owner off myself in cash or with a separate loan. I was in college, and the mortgage payments were actually cheaper than the cheapest off-campus apartment I could rent, as the school was in Cambridge, MA, and Boston had/has expensive prices.

And we have a MOD update on the subject.

As many of you know I have been thinking that the MODS are now the ‘cutting edge’ actual policy purveyors, no matter what the written ‘policy’ might say.

Check this out -

Somewhat shocking that they admit that Amazon could be ‘confusing’ though… :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

I realize some of the pages are confusing in terms of showing debit cards as accepted. We are working to get this verbiage updated.

This means, We are working to get the words “debit cards” removed from all US help pages. Does not mean they won’t be accepted or that policy is changing. So for new sellers, It will not say Debit Card on any Card Page.

Unfourtnately won’t stop new sellers from trying then complaining, and it won’t stop the people who continue to say they are acceptable, just like the next reply:

as copied from the EU forum:

To their credit they at least say:

(If you are trying to open a US seller account a credit card will be required)

LOL because once we all left the FMTs all got tired of answering this same damn question over and over for themselves

I got so tired of it, I just linked back to my comprehensive post about it my “11 things” thread…which is WHY I made the thread.

(And to any certain someones reading this, lol no, that is not spamming like some banned members would do by linking to their own irrelevant topics and then boast about their numbers on social media )

Yes No Maybe

I believe (from anecdotal evidence) that many years ago Amazon was more inclined to accept debit cards from sellers in countries where credit cards are not the norm.

I have wondered if that debit card language was kept in place so they are not discriminatory – not discriminating against sellers in those countries. Of course, they can keep the language and not allow the card. And I think that’s what they have been trending toward over the last few years.

So staying out of this!

Amazon’s help pages notably leave out all mention of a debit card. Though they do mention a prepaid. Maybe they view a prepaid as a debit? It would explain the total lack of a mention of that card type on the help pages.

The Editorial Team has been busy in the days since our friend @GGX opened this thread:

The years-extant SHC page “Bank account and credit card information for your seller account” @ https: //sellercentral.amazon.com/help/hub/reference/19791 has been retitled “Bank account and credit or debit card information for your seller account.”

The equally-vintaged page “How to update my credit card information?” @ https: //sellercentral.amazon.com/help/hub/reference/202131360 has been retitled “Update credit or debit card information.”

There’s also a new page I hadn’t seen before, titled “Add, delete, and verify your credit or debit card information” @ https: //sellercentral.amazon.com/help/hub/reference/UQLF3C3HXXXERLC.

I leave it to the gentle reader to decide what might be Amazon’s motivation for making these changes…

I still see many references to just “credit card” but they did change a lot of headers to “credit or debit card”

As usual they’re just keeping things confusing.

So Amazon, in its own inimitably awful style, has now added ‘debit cards’ to every one of those.

My wife says that she is the optimist and I am the pessimist. Well, I actually had HOPE after the comment from CR that they might get it straightened out.

My life on Amazon is doomed to disappointment…
:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

Maybe CR meant that debit cards are supposed to be accepted but the pages left that out so it’s confusing because it’s omitted?

That’s the only reasonable explanation for them ADDING “debit card” to a bunch of pages.

Who knows what they’re thinking though, as we know the Amazon forum mods don’t know anything, and we suspect that they’re really just chatGPT bots.
