[WSJ] Amazon Launches ‘Haul’ to Sell Low-Priced Items to Compete with Temu, Shein

They have improved Haul.

It is no longer sold on the desktop site. App only now.

Will make it easier to discontinue. I guess.

Amazon’s strength is two fold, competitive price and quick delivery.

Haul is only competitive for a small number of undesirable products, does not offer fast delivery.

You can quote me on this, if you like.

This gave me a good laugh.

Well apparently the price for the hairbrush rose from $1.56 to $3.95 sometime after that article came out – or maybe the prices constantly fluctuate over the hours and days, as they do on Amazon? Maybe if I checked tomorrow it might be $1.01, or $8.99.

The flat shipping charge of $3.99 is on top of that. According to the article: “What about shipping? Free next-day Prime delivery doesn’t apply. For Haul orders over $25, there’s no shipping charge, but expect to wait a week or two while your stuff comes directly from China. For orders under $25, there’s a $3.99 fee.”

Just had to recheck, with all the tariff and shipping drama going on. Now some of the the Amazon Haul pages linked to in papy’s article, such as the page for that no-pull hairbrush, now show no prices at all. (I didn’t check the QR code, but the web pages used to show the prices.) But the Silicone Body Scrubbers, listed in the article at price of $1.98 for two, do still show a price: now $4.99 for two.

That article makes no sense at all.

Yes, Haul now needs to modify its model of selling cheap stuff, just as shein and temu are.

IF the de minimus remains the same, then we are talking a 30% tariff (just days ago, this percent was deemed absurd), which will raise prices at the retail level from maybe 10% to 20. (more depending on if a middleman is involved, and how, where, sold, and demand, etc).

This can be done.

For amazon to consider adding levis, the gap, etc. What? Their customer is cheap $2 to $20 items (per the article).

And storing from domestic warehouses? What? I thought the trick was DIRECT FROM CHINA - no warehousing - no overhead - no us labor - no shipping?

If domestic, then to fill that warehouse, the tariffs are way more than 30%.

anyway, the article was probably written last week.

Just had to check this item again, in view of all the tariff drama. Well for now the “hairbrush” is still going for $3.95, so no additional effect yet. But wow, a customer review has come in! Go Amz Haul, you’re doing great!

1.0 out of 5 stars No good.

READ the small print, will ya,
on the photo, found to the right and below the QR. [magnifier not included]

It clearly says “Best if used on hamsters”

Well, duh! I mean, it’s very accurately labeled as a “NO-PULL” hairbrush.

If you had a new initiative which was failing and in need of a rethink or an abortion, would you consider blaming that action on a change in tariffs?

Haul is so inferior to Temu or Shain that any public explanation other than incompetence would be a God send.

Too bad we do not know the names of the people on Amazon’s Haul Team, so we can check their career changes on LinkedIn.

So many Amazon programs just evaporate from the face of the earth.

The first two I thought of is Hotel Rental and Installation services. The first we used a few times and were happy with the deals we got. The later, we never used though thought of signing up for some specific work we do in our company that fit the model.

I am sure many more examples are in someone’s memory out there.

I’m seeing Amazon Haul commercials on TV lately…

They highlight the 2-3 week delivery wait.

Not kidding btw on the delivery promise

By the time you get your stuff, you forgot why or that you ordered it…

Amazon Fire Phone leaps to mind.

The Fine Arts and Collectibles Categories come to my mind. Just about every seller who had significant inventory has been run off from all but Sports Collectibles and Coins. And they are limited to third party graded products.

No new applications accepted. I do not think there is a category team for most of these categories any more.

And the requests for invoices on 100 year old Advertising Collectibles and the like has left the categories to languish.

I last archived this CHC (“Customer-facing Help Content”) page on 26Nov`24, the day before making the quoted post above, because I keep copies of help pages so as to maintain a change log, and (hopefully) thus not find ourselves blindsided by yet another of Amazon’s frequent tacking of course.

The page has been retitled “Amazon Return Policy;” the URL embedded in the quoted post hasn’t changed, but the content itself has been VASTLY revamped:

Among the multiple changes, It’s sad to note that all direct mention of Amazon Handmade has now been eliminated…

It might would’ve been better to post this update in our friend @Canadianmag’s 3Oct`24 SAS thread linked in the above quote, but it’s auto-closed; @ any rate, I wanted to offer a heads-up on these changes, as they can affect a seller’s own policy & procedures (e.g., such as certain templates, etc.).

Suddenly remembered the existence of good old Amazon Haul! Apparently it’s still around. So of course I had to look up that $1.56 No-pull Hairbrush I seem to be obsessed with. Discovered it went from $1.56 to 3.95 as stated earlier, and now it’s selling for $5.28.

Amazon is pushing it hard on my Buyer home page. Which is weird because I’ve never even clicked to it, much less purchased anything.

I overlooked that trading cards, known as collectible cards, can be listed as a Final Sale item with No Return along with No Refund. I have not noticed a Non-Refundable item until recently on amazon . com.
