[AP] Bill that could make TikTok unavailable in the US advances quickly in the House

I’m so sad - I LOVE (like puffy heart with a cherry on top) love TikTok. I really hope they work it out. I love watching TT videos, I love when my kid sends me her favorites, it just brings me joy.

Wait are you being literal?

Very much so. It’s one of my favorite things. Of course, it is also one of my greatest time wasters - when I “pop on” for 5 mins then 2 hours pass - but the algorithm knows to show me a) GenX humor, b) rescue animals, c) animal voiceovers, d) cooking - I’ve learned so much about so many things on TikTok!

Knowledge always comes at a price.

I remain unwilling to pay TikTok’s.

Couple things:

  1. I think this move only bans TT from App stores meaning if you have it now - nothing to be concerned about. No new users.

  2. There’s so much money in this thing that TT will do the needful to be compliant, all while obviously still having access at the mother ship of everything they say that they won’t.

This whole thing is just for show. Literally nothing is going to change, believe me.

I agree with you - I’m not really that concerned and I also think it’s just all performative.

I would like to see a (trustworthy) US-owned company buy it, but I am concerned that any terms of sale will require disclosing and/giving access to PII to…other parties not under US law.

DogtamerBot Enterprises, UnLTD thanks you for your support of our piddling acquisition bid.

From the article on CNN:

TikTok would be prohibited from US app stores and from “internet hosting services” that support it.

The article goes on to specify that US users could be cut off.

I suspect the net result will be even more people using VPNs.

The govt always ruins everything fun.

Can’t drive without a seatbelt or at 150MPH and now I can’t watch some moron dump ice on themselves in a snow pack.

LOL

This will always be necessary as long as we have not addressed the root cause, of poor American media literacy where people will believe just about anything, hook line and sinker from foreign entities.
Disinformation is rampant in today’s social media environment. It is used to divide what used to make American society spectacular… The people.

Five or 6 years ago, used to be a Verizon or T-Moble commercia w/ a “dumb” blonde saying: “It’s on the internet. It’s gotta be true.” Used to groan when I heard it–but I believe many Millennials and younger, having been brought up w/ the internet have very few critical skills to tell what is truth and what is “disinformation” Unfortunately, people my age, too, Think we’d have more sense-or perhaps I’m too d— crusty!!

No offense to anyone here who sells on the platform–BUT if half the American population spends their time watching twerk-dancing and American current events/history/ politics as interpreted by the Chinese --God help us all!!

(I’m not a member of TT or any social media, even FB—Admittedly a Luddite; I find it too intrusive. My family has given up attempting to persuade me. Rather read a physical book in my free time or stream some of the wonderful stuff on PBS+; Sony+, Acorn and Britbox)

I suspect you’re remembering the ever-hilarious State Farm® National Media Campaign archived in such YouTube videos as this one:

I would like it be noted that rumours of me, myself, having played the role of the “French Model” - and likewise, the better ½ playing the role of the ‘Dumb Blonde’ - are not true. :slightly_smiling_face:

Millennials and Gen Z are far more sophisticated in their thinking then Gen X - and while this is highly reductive - anecdotally, most of the ultra-exclusivist thought I come across is from functionally literate, older folk - in this sense, they tend to be on the opposite end of the spectrum of those people with various selective/subjective identity markers - I honestly believe there exists a quiet majority that touches all sides of the spectrum but takes up a huge center - almost the entirety of the spectrum.

Disinformation is a tactic which has always existed - its reach is larger today because of the internets and so it seems more prolific. But I bet if one were to sample the ratio of folk on a socio-cultural spectrum (the cultural zeitgeist if you will including everything) - then you would probably end up with the same proportion today that you had 50 years ago. We’ve come very far since then, albeit with some overcorrections, which will eventually be mitigated on their own.

My long-time concurrence of the likelihood of this assessment being correct is likewise based on merely-anecdotal evidence, rather than empirical - but there comes a time when a preponderance of evidence cannot easily be written off as a mere will o’ wisp.
