AWS outages, operating glitches: 20 October 2025

I will say this.
I have a few friends in IT security, including professors.

Unofficially it wasn’t an error. They were hacked by a foreign state. No it wasn’t Russia. Amazon will never admit it because of their close ties with the very state that hacked them.

Not a surprise. If this is true, it’s pretty scary and should serve as a wakeup call.

Google Next?

Maybe both at the same time so those bastards can take down 50% of our net.

Guess this was a tariff retaliation?

One thing that strikes me is that if you remember the early days of the Internet (and I know a larger than normal percentage here do!), one of the great things about it was the multi-path routing; if a section of the internet had problems, traffic would be automatically routed along different paths, and still reach the destination, as long as the destination was not directly connected to the problem server/router/whatever.

Boy, have things changed! One service goes down, and takes most of the internet with it! Another example of consolidation not being a good thing (another, of course, being all of the radio stations in a market owned by one or two companies)

So nothing has changed - underlying internet routing infrastructure still works like that. The service layer that is being routed through a single provider is the issue. In days of yore, services were more distributed; now many systems on the www are centralized through cloud infrastructure causing systems cascade - still many are realizing this problem vector and finding alternative multi-cloud routing services thus avoiding single point failures like a few days ago.

After being mostly trouble-free today, certain web sites are having connectivity problems again this evening. Things are still not resolved. < sigh>

I’m trying to access two different weather radar sites. One is accuweather.com but the other is the weather/radar page attached to a news website. The news page is up but the radar page won’t load.

Accuweather is back now. We’re supposed to have rain overnight and then rain all day tomorrow. Checking the status.

We’ve been at war with China for years, sadly in the same way a deer is at war with the hunter. The difference is we now have an administration that is shooting back, figuratively for now.

*cough *cough…binance. We definitely are signaling toughness.

It has started up again this evening. After a trouble-free day, connectivity problems started around 10:00 pm CDT.

Downdetector shows a big jump in issues starting about that time with AWS as well as a lot of other services (Netflix; Hulu, Xbox; +) although not as many as during the big outage.

I’ve not seen any issues, but not doing much at the moment.

There are several sites that are down including Amazon itself (for me at least). About all that’s working for me are Facebook and YouTube. (I watch a livestream with a chat. All that is working). And of course SAS is working.

I watched a fair amount of YouTube (one of the services showing issues) with no disruption at all. Perhaps this time it’s not the NE being hit.
