Before you ask, weak passwords are less of an issue with 2 factor. Always protect your accounts! Decent passwords and 2 factor baby!
Not to mention adequate backup capability.
There’s a hoary old adage about that: if there aren’t @ least 4 copies, it ain’t backed up.
I recently watched a YouTube video from an “expert” about the choices for backups; someone asked about using flash-drives vs other methods.
He correctly (AFAIK) pointed out that a $10 flash-drive is not the top level quality; an SSD using similar but much more robust technology. But because of the cost, an old-fashioned HD is the better way to go.
Good advice, but I was shaking my head that he never mentioned that you should (at the least) alternate devices you back up to!
(Okay, I’ll admit; I’m as sloppy as the next guy on this; my server crashed months ago (used only for streaming music and archiving/backup files), and I’ve still not quite finished getting it up and running. On the flip side, not much that is all that important that is not backed up; most critical is probably product photos, but if they are important, then they can still be re-shot).
OICU812 for the win!!!
I’m always offended when large companies don’t offer authenticator apps or passkeys and force 2FA through text message. My bank, my health insurance company… I mean, yeah it’s not like those guys have anything important to secure, but it’s the principle of the thing, right?
Heck, I’m just glad that “security question” seems to be a thing of the past.
Mother’s Maiden Name: besides the fact that it’s public record, the last family reunion I attended had over 150 people; many disappointed at the low turnout. My GGF was a scoundrel*; more than a few cousins/uncles followed his footsteps; all have a good chance of answering this question.
High School: Well, went to the smallest school in my district. Meaning only about 2000 people have me in their yearbook. Sorry, not so great.
College Job: There are people ON THIS FORUM that could answer that question about me (because they were actual customers).
First pet: Pretty sure that’s posted on “Fun with Wild Animals” at some point.
Favorite Food: Let’s see; did I set this up while still a vegetarian? What time of year; Sushi or Pizza? What mood was I in at the time? Sorry, that’s an impossible question to remember, without writing it down along with the password (so what’s the point?)
2FA much better, even if annoying.
*for example, left my GGM for a much younger woman. Moved out of state. Later mailed GGM, telling her he was sorry, and to come join him. Once there, he divorced her, now that she was no longer in a community property state, so he got to keep everything. Yeah, total scumbag.at
Nope, sorry. I just changed from Verizon to Optimum a couple weeks ago and I had to create security questions to make an account.
Optimum is sorta a wildcard.
Great internet. But they do keep raising the price unless you call.
But internet portal sucks. I don’t recall “security questions”, but limited to a 4 character UserID, and 4 character password (both provided; don’t know if it’s even possible to change)
OTOH, the only thing I can do when logging onto my account is to pay my bill. If someone wants to hack my account to pay my bill, I could likely deal with that (same with EZPass, which has similar security measures)
The hijackers asked for £5 million. Joke’s on them–the company went under instead. 700 people now out of work.
