Thank you for the article share, @selg.

Lewy body dementia, a neurological disorder

I hate to hear this. LBD is a terrible way to go, for you and your loved ones, and is often misdiagnosed and mistreated. It’s symptoms can look like Alzheimers or Parkinson’s, but because its origins in the brain structure and neurochemistry are different, some AD and PD meds actually make things worse.

I’m not a fan of JB, but this is something I wouldn’t wish on anyone. Prayers for peace and comfort for Mrs Bezos’ loved ones and caregivers.

In 1995, Ms. Bezos and her husband, Miguel Bezos, who is known as Mike, invested just over $245,000 in Amazon, the online bookstore that her son founded in 1994.

I didn’t know this. That’s quite a chunk of change for any parent to be willing to lose.

I hope JB or Amazon or his foundation or whatever has donated at least that much to LBD prevention research.

Papy , thank you for clarifying LBD, and putting Jeff’s parents’ contribution in perspective. JB also worked in Wall Street for 9 years before starting Amazon, so he was not penniless at the beginning.

Very true! I know his parents have to be so proud of him and what he’s built. Half a million is nothing to see your child happy and successful; it’s just money. The bigger gift IMO was trusting and believing in him.

ETA:

It always just digs in my heart a little bit differently than some other dementias. Dementia is always cruel, but LBD has extra thouaands of paper cuts of cruelty.

AI generated this answer to my question:

Jeff Bezos’s Contributions to Brain Research

Financial Support for Neuroscience

  • Donation to Princeton: Jeff Bezos and his ex-wife MacKenzie donated $15 million to establish the Bezos Center for Neural Circuit Dynamics at Princeton University. This center focuses on understanding brain function and neurological disorders.

Interest in Brain-Computer Interfaces

  • Investments in Biotech: Bezos has invested in brain-computer interface (BCI) startups, such as Synchron, which aims to develop devices that connect the brain directly to computers. This technology has potential applications in healthcare and beyond.

Advocacy for Neuroscience

  • Public Statements: Bezos has expressed interest in advancements in neuroscience, emphasizing the importance of understanding the brain for improving learning methods and treating neurological diseases.

These contributions highlight Bezos’s commitment to advancing brain research and technology.

My take: Pocket change.

Meg Whitman (eBay) has donated far more to Princeton than Bezos, having built and named “Whitman College.”

Always love to see AI getting it right

Yeah, I don’t want to count his ventures that have more commercial interests or goals. But happy to give him credit where due! (even if maybe MacKenzie was perhaps more of a driving force)

Thanks for the link. It looks as though it is a going concern. JB could easily add to their endowment, to great effect, in the next few weeks.

Oh, gosh. I’m way behind here, but an old college friend of mine died of Lewy Body Dementia some time ago. I had never heard of it till then. Just a horrible, horrible way to go, and extremely traumatic for the loved ones. All the money in the world can’t buy a body that doesn’t break down. R.I.P., Bezos Mom

Well put. It’s a rough path. I honestly might take back every bad thought I’ve ever had about Amazon if Bezos money can find a LBD cure, and make it widely (freely) available alongside a prevention method like a vaccine that they can add to childhood MMR or HPV shots. :folded_hands:
