[CNBC] Shopify CEO says staffers need to prove jobs can’t be done by AI before asking for more headcount

Key Points

  • Shopify CEO Tobi Lutke told employees in a memo that they’ll have to show jobs can’t be done by artificial intelligence before asking for more headcount and resources.

  • Lutke said there’s a “fundamental expectation” that employees are using AI in their day-to-day work.

  • Tech companies have poured money into developing AI at the same time that they continue to cut jobs.

“AI”

The BS buzz word of 2024-2026.

Can this CEO prove that AI can’t do his job better? I mean it doesn’t take that much effort to run a company into the ground.

This. We have all see Amazon’s bots are dumb as a box of rocks, and even Apple AI is so stupid that it makes up news headlines, so yeah maybe lets prove efficiency and effective use of AI first.

I always asked when an AI driven car (waymo, auto pilot, etc) breaks the law and gets pulled over, who gets the ticket?

I don’t even want to read the article because the premise is so asinine, even for a tech company. “Tell me you don’t understand software without telling me you don’t understand software” aye yi yi

2024 was Shopify’s first year with a profit from operations.

It may be right on the mark to keep a tight rein on increases in headcount.

Any way of framing that indirectly might be preferable to being blunt about it.

Whether the premise is asinine or not it will probably please Wall Street traders more than a hiring freeze would.

Nobody tells the truth unless forced to.

Nobody?

Anyone who does can be treated as a rounding error.

… or is it that some people can’t handle the truth and only believe what they want to hear?

Does one look out of a peep hole or into a peep hole?
Reality is … it is a small view no matter which way you choose to look through it.
