On Amazon that just means that Amazon entered the tracking number of the label provided to the buyer into their system.
In other words, their SYSTEM picked up a number. It is useless garbage until the ‘buyer’ actually drops it off at the PO.
At that time you should start seeing actual tracking UNLESS they are using the new scam of using the self service kiosk and never putting it in the box at the PO.
Sadly Amazon will fall for it and you will have to show that the ‘initial’ scan is no different than a seller using a SCAN Form which Amazon does not accept as proof of mailing!
Yes, this has been the case for several years. It was stupid then and it is stupid now, but this is how it is.
Every time we get a return request and Amazon generates a return label for the buyer, the status instantly says “Carrier picked up the package.” And it stays that way for all eternity unless the buyer actually returns the parcel. There is never anything previous to that status, so sellers don’t know if a buyer has actually returned an item until and unless it’s scanned by the carrier. It’s been this way for years and is, indeed, stupid garbage.
BTW nearly all our returns are via UPS (which costs booksellers AND buyers significantly more than if Amazon used Media Mail or BPM for eligible media items, but I digress.)
