Ebay Authenticity Guarantee

I have been running more auctions this month than I usually run.

Prices realized are also up and I have sold some trading cards for more than $250 each.

The authentication program applied

I have not experienced this before because most of the trading cards I sell are tobacco cards which are not in the same categories as Sports and Non-Sport trading cards.

The cards are sent to an Ebay authenticator before they are sent to the buyer.

The authenticator not only certifies the card is genuine, but also checks for flaws which are not stated in words in the listing.

Given the increasing tendency of sellers to cut corners by referring the buyers to the images without itemizing all flaws this leads to both the buyer and seller being notified of any flaws not itemized. The buyer is given the option of cancelling the sale for even a minor flaw.

In my case, the buyer was a pro. He saw the problem. Agreed to proceed with the sale and did so promptly.

He purchased close to $1k from me and only this card was in a category which required authentication.

I could have listed it in a category which would not. I probably will not avoid authentication in the future, but I also will be more vigilant in using my words.

Was this factored in to handling/delivery time by eBay? And how long did it delay this order for your Buyer?

This is a process which is identified by Ebay on the listing it applies to, and yes it does reflect in the estimated delivery time.

A similar process is used for pricey sneakers and handbags.

It does not change anything about when the proceeds of the sale are placed in the seller’s Ebay account, unless the transaction triggers a hold.

The defects issue is frequently a subject of seller complaints on the Ebay forum, for NEW condition sneakers. Although the complaining sellers frequently withhold information, I surmise that many of the defects found by authenticators may be on outlet store purchases.
