Extreme Cropping - Is this new?

I noticed that Amazon listing photos seem to be AI cropped right up to the first colored pixel. It’s really noticeable in the jewelry department where you’d expect some space at the bottom of the items.

This should make it interesting for the sellers who were adding a white border to images to get around their non-white backgrounds.

I mean technically that’s proper cropping as per the style guide, but I agree it’s gonna catch those who can’t get a white background

It isn’t just AI cropping images … it’s AI not being consistent.

We have an item that shows this on the search page …

And this on the product detail page …

Where in the heck did April 11 come from?

This is the only item for us that it has happen to … but can’t imagine that it is the only item this is happening to.

As a buyer I welcome this improvement.

As a seller, I would also welcome this improvement because many buyers avoid amateur sellers with non-white backgrounds.

If there are some problems, everything on the internet has some problems.

There’s a reason why certain categories support Style Guides & BTGs (“Browse Tree Guide”) which recommend the use of “Drop Shadows” for Main Images, and some don’t.

It’s been our own experience that a properly-deployed addition of a drop shadow (best achieved, in my book , by utilizing another “AI” - the Adobe Illustrator Software Suite - albeit there exist many other viable solutions for doing the same) can often go far in preventing Amazon’s ever-evolving Amabots from tanking our sales with an ill-advised image edit which we did not implement ourselves.

Is this happening in the previews only or also on the pdp?
