FTC Approves Final Order against Sitejabber, Which Misrepresented Ratings and Reviews by Consumers Who Had Not Yet Received Products or Services

Good news for ecommerce Sellers whose online competition might have been integrating Sitejabber with Shopify, WooCommerce, Facebook, Instagram, and others and thus displaying misleading (inflated) product reviews throughout searches and landing pages…or maybe a warning for online Sellers currently using Sitejabber, that their review rate might decrease. :grimacing:

According to PCWorld’s November 2024 article on the FTC action:

Sitejabber’s service asked customers to “rate your online shopping experience” after checkout with a one-to-five star scale and a text box. These “reviews” — of the online checkout experience and not the associated product — were then presented as product reviews for an inflated score.

Additionally, the FTC cited the following violations around the timing of review collection:

Sitejabber collected ratings and reviews from consumers for its online business clients at the time of purchase, before they received or had the chance to experience the products or services they bought.
