Big day today…
Whaleco, Inc., which operates the online marketplace Temu, will pay $2 million to resolve Federal Trade Commission allegations that it violated the INFORM Consumers Act of 2023, by failing to provide consumers with required information and tools to help them avoid and report stolen, counterfeit, or unsafe goods while shopping online.
While I’ve long wholeheartedly supported the FTC’s actions in case like this, I’m almost always a bit dismayed by the scanty volume of the fines imposed, and/or the scope of the corrective actions required for coming into compliance.
This round was no exception.
So like half a day’s income.
Yeah, me too. My guess is that since Temu is the first case, the FTC didn’t want to push too hard.
I hope if they continue to flout the requirements, the fines increase exponentially.
Well….. The low estimate for 2024 was $47.5B at Temu
That would be $130M per day if my math is right.
The fine was 22 mins of sales on the rev side.
Slap on the wrist with a feather. My assumption is they laughed at this fine.
Meanwhile, the FTC fined Nature’s Bounty $600K, or something like that, for a misleading variation on Amazon.
Doesn’t seem like “America First” to me.
Well, that’s a joke. Hopefully they dislike paying the US government enough to make it hurt just a little.
