Here is mine. I did by order numbers and not revenue since I have raised prices so much since 2008. There are no stats from 2008 to till 2010 or so because of Etsy changes. 2013 was my best year and it was a slow decline because of Etsy’s numerous changes…bottoming out at 2017 with the arrive of my twins (Kids #4&5) and I am still trying to chase that 2013 high ever since ![]()
Could still hit or exceed 2023 or 2022 in June-December?
Just saw this article that I think goes with the video @joebcrafts posted.
The specific products that you sell matters, but Etsy needs to figure out how to mark their consumer territory…or if they want to be the flea market of flea markets.
Even though I complain, when I think “handmade,” I do think Etsy first. Even before a Google search.
During the pandemic there were people who lost their jobs, primarily in food service, entertainment (movie theater, concert, sports, etc), travel, and other things related to gatherings of people.
There were also a lot of people that did not lose their jobs. Those people had discretionary funds that couldn’t be spent on dining, entertainment, or travel. Many of those people chose to spend that money on their homes (renovations, decor, home office, etc).
Once the pandemic was over, those discretionary spenders wanted to get back to traveling, sporting events, concerts, etc and they don’t need to buy more stuff. They’ve shifted to experiences.
Because there was $814,000,000,000 worth of money “created” to bail out everyone (whether they needed it or not), inflation has been rampant. The total spend is $4,000,000,000,000.
It is asinine to believe that spending on discretionary would grow just a few years into a high inflation cycle created by lots of cash infused into the economy.
It is amazing that there hasn’t been a massive crash yet… but maybe that is just because there has never been this much money created out of thin air ever. It is a ludicrous amount of money and until it gets “redistributed” inflation will only continue to stay high. Millions took a year, billions took several years, and trillions might take 5 or more.
I have mentioned my daughter is on the crafts show circuit.
Crowds are good, sales uneven.
The number of Etsy sellers at these shows displaying their Etsy IDs are way up.
Are they making sales? Is it affecting their Etsy sales? Are they impacting other craftsmen’s sales?
At last weekend’s sale on the Harbor in Boston, higher end sellers were not having a good show on either day, Were the migrants from Etsy?
I do not know the answer to any of these questions. But I assume Etsy is not providing enough revenue for these sellers to meet their sales goals.
wow…thought that my graph for a minute…same curve.
I make stained glass and my sales have basically stopped to a crawl. My prices are below market but still no bites. I’m going to give MakersPlace a shot, as far as I know they only allow hand made.
I’d check the MakerPlace threads here first - might not be worth your time.
Non handmade filtrated into Makerplace long ago. While initially Makerplace was successful for me, it is now dead since they are not promoting it like they were in the beginning. Etsy is still doing ok for me but definitely slower than years past. What used to be easily 20-30 orders for a weekend on Amazon this time a year, today so far I have TWO for the weekend ![]()
Zibbet was bought by Michael’s and is now Makersplace. When I sold on Zibbet I did better than on ET$Y as I drove my own sales successfully. Makersplace may not be as saturated with sellers of junk making my items easier to find amongst all the congestion.
I wish you luck. I did well there when they promoted it, but when they stopped it died out.
