How is MakerPlace Doing?

Congrats on having 8k in sales on MakerPlace. My sales were about $100 from one item that sells over and over.

Makerplace sent ME instructions which I sent to him (it’s an older man, no offense to men but that makes it even worse). He says it won’t work. So now I’ve forwarded his email to Makerplace to ask them to PLEASE help me with this. Good grief.

It’s only 119 orders. Unfortunately I’d say 80% of my sales are larger items when Michaels has their big promotions. Which I HATE but that’s their business model. So unless they keep doing those, it won’t be as much going forward. Especially if I have that bit 2 rating on there.

Did anybody receive ā€œMakerPlace Seller Saturdayā€ email today (1/4)? Also that email on 12/21 and 12/28?

The last one I received was on 12/14.

Also, did anybody receive the ā€œA payment to you has been processedā€ email from Michaels after the payment transferred on 12/29 or 12/30?

I did received one of those email on 12/17 for the Payment that was transferred on 12/15 or 12/16, but not for the payment transfer on 12/29 or 12/30.

Just wondering whether it’s because MP didn’t sent them or it’s just me no longer receiving them.

The last seller related email I received from Michaels was on 12/20, telling us how to contact customer when they disabled the Message function. The emails to me seems to have stopped right after the MP Message fiasco that included everybody’s email address in the message, and they disabled the whole messaging function. Wonder if that has anything to do with me (or maybe others too) no longer receiving those emails?

nope

I didn’t receive it, either.

I finally sold something last week. It’s supposed to be delivered tomorrow. We’ll see how long it takes them to pay it out. I’ve read some posts where people are still waiting to be paid past their scheduled date

If this is your first sale on MP, congrats and hope sales continues for you.

Personally I kind of gave up on MP, even with Michaels giving all the extra discounts out of their own pocket, I only had 2 sales during the holiday and that’s also the only 2 sale in 6 months. My items that sells well on Amazon, doesn’t on MP. It’s either a total different kind of customer base or the public just not able to see our things easily.

Yes, it took a bid getting use to MP’s way of payout to sellers, but I think at this point, it is working as they described.

For my last 2 orders, the payout were on time, they were just a little over 2 weeks from order date to Payout date. The amount the days it took kind of depends on the delivery of the order.

Look under ā€œFinancesā€ > ā€œOverviewā€, the payment first show up in ā€œFloating balanceā€, then 14 days after delivery of the order, that amount moves into ā€œAvailable Balanceā€ for payout, which happens each Sunday or Monday.

Thanks! Yes, it was my first sale. Ironically, it was a Christmas item that sold after Christmas and was not on sale. I think I signed up with Michaels back in June.

did you report these? Or is it too much whack-a-mole?

No I did not on this particular one because while this image was on the Jewelry category page, it does not link to a seller and I have not looked further. I did stumble onto this seller who sells jewelry but apparently also ā€œHandmadeā€ sweaters that are obviously made by another brand…Vila.

And this one who appears to be holding a low rent Poshmark garage sale

Makerplace is turning into a shitshow

Sales on Michael’s have tanked. I know there is a lot going on in regards to low sales right now but I noticed today they have a ā€œTop Ratedā€ category which only features products/shops that have a 5 star rating. So there are shops with ONE listing that had a 5 star review for a total shop review of ONE. Now there are plenty of shops with a single product that has many 5 star reviews but if the shop total average is not 5 stars, it will never be in this ā€œTop Ratedā€ category. :man_facepalming:

Yup. I’m screwed because Michaels refuses to remove the 2* my customer left and can’t fix. They left me a 5* to replace it, but that still leaves me at 4. I’ve tried about 8 times to get Michaels to remove it - even sending them screenshots of the customer’s reviews saying they want to delete it. But nope, they won’t.

And it’s a shame - I was selling higher-priced things there and Michaels was making some money off me. But not anymore.

I set my makerplace on vacation but I need to just cancel and shut it down as I’m most likely going to take a long break from my business all together. (I got a lot of stress and anxiety lately with both my business (supplier and usps issues) and one of my kids needing reoccurring eye injections/laser surgery every 6 weeks).

So for Makerplace:

The seo is terrible and search is pretty much broken. There doesn’t seem to be a way to rank in Makerplace. It’s not done by relevancy, or most recent or by sales. I have old items that out rank items that have had many sales. It’s better for me to drive traffic to Etsy because then items that sell appear higher in Etsy search results. I’d rather rank higher in search results then save whatever it is the affiliate fee is for Makerplace.

They are really pushing influencer and affiliate tracking which is not really a good way to grow a business as people will just take their influence elsewhere. If you have a huge social media following and save money selling on Makerplace then I guess it’s ā€œworking as intendedā€, but those kinds of sellers are going to point their traffic somewhere else if it means saving more money in the long term.

Makerplace thinks that people will come to makerplace and stay at makerplace but since you can’t find anything in makerplace there is no reason a buyer needs to revisit Makerplace. I am also finding that a lot of these people who have high counts on social media that Makerplace is promoting are mostly just importing stuff and is not actually handmade. At first I was keeping track of names and shops but realized that it was useless.

I was signed up to do an event in store but anxiety took over when I realized that if people ask me how I’m doing in makerplace I really can’t lie and tell them how great it is because it’s not a good marketplace. I haven’t had a sale since December. My Etsy shop sales in January and February were double that of my December sales….so once again it’s not me, it’s the marketplace. So I canceled the event and put my shop on vacation mode.

I lurk a lot on the Michael’s subreddit and the stuff I read about how things are being ran in store and how employees feel is very reminiscent of what I was reading last year in Joanns subreddit and we all know what’s happened with Joanns. I know there was a new ceo as well for Michael’s and I’m not sure how he has much to do with Makerplace. It does seem like they have also lost focus on having people teach classes and sell supplies. I think originally they really wanted to boost their own supply selling but most people who run a handmade business don’t source supplies from Michael’s :joy:.

I hope all gets worked out and mended :people_hugging:

I was doing OK, but I haven’t had a sale there since mid-December. My shop shows ONE 5-star rating, but obviously that hasn’t helped.

All of the above. Since recent sales have been non-existent, I’ve been pretty much ignoring my shop AND social media. However, I just added 5 new listings in response to their call for ā€œwestern glamā€. Whether I make it to Pinterest remains to be seen.

I feel like all the Pinterest stuff is kind of outdated though right? Like no one I know uses Pinterest anymore and a lot of my pins I’ve saved over the years have disappeared. It seems like a lot of it has been taken over by AI and bots. I feel like a lot of these social media platforms if you don’t get in while it’s still in the young growing stages that it’s hard to really gain any sort of following.

If you have quality products and reputation then you shouldn’t even really need Social Media or advertising. I think Makerplace really bungled it in the beginning when there was all the people saying you were giving up all your rights in their terms of service. Etsy was slow to start too when it opened and they had so many community aspects that brought crafters together like the chat rooms and showcasing recently sold and recently listed along with the weekly featured seller. Letting the community work together to chose what appeared on the front page also was very important. I think once Etsy eliminated a lot of the people first community stuff is when they went downhill and Makerplace really should have focused on what made Etsy great that Etsy got rid of. All they have ran on is ā€œwe are better then Etsyā€ except…your not lol.

I have been doing the same thing, didn’t even bother to sign-in to the dashboard, thinking if I have a sale, I’ll get an email notice.

Well, I did signed in today, and saw this notice:

Guess if I had any sale, I might have not known about it. Wonder what will happen if you have a sale on MP and don’t know about it and don’t fulfill it? Did it just fall off your ā€œOrderā€ list?

I’m pretty sure I didn’t get any sales.

I want to close my store on Michaels MakerPlace, but I can’t figure out how. All I could find was the vacation mode for max 6 months, but no other way to just close the account. Do you guys know? Thanks.

You have to fill out a support request and it takes a few days.

They suggested that I just switch from the professional account to basic and edit my inventory.

I asked if there was a way to mass deactivate since I have 500 listings, but there isn’t. I would have to go in and edit every listing.

So I told them to just close it. It took them a few days. They keep sending me follow-up emails asking for my opinion and I haven’t bothered to sit down and tell them everything wrong since I feel like I’ve been pretty vocal here, the Facebook group, and numerous support requests since they opened that didn’t seem to go anywhere.

If people can make it work for them I’m glad! It’s just too many headaches for me to ā€œsave money on feesā€.

The 6 months max for vacation must be new. When I was putting my shop in vacation mode it would only let me do 30 days. I probably maybe would have chosen 6 months to not actually close my shop, but at this point I am done so it’s water under the bridge.
