What is your process for when you make a new item, but does not have sales rank and is not searchable? The page comes up when you click the link to it, but there is no sales rank and the only sales are generated off of ad’s.
I figured I would make a question out of this while waiting 3 months for seller support.
An item has to have sales to have a sales rank. We are not sure how long Amazon bases sales rank on (if there is a time factor) or if it is just based on current sales (probably last 30 days) compared to every other item in the category.
In the past … occasionally we would have an item with sales rank not have a sales rank after Amazon has made one of their updates. We would open a case and give the ASIN, original date listed and note that it had a sales rank prior to such in such time when it disappeared. It was usually fixed within 5 or less working days.
Our #1 item has been that way for about 6 months now. We should open a case. But it still shows up in searches and is still our #1 item so we have been lazy and focused on other things.
that is a bit excessive time … we would probably either re-open (send an update asking for a reply) or open a new case.
Historically, the better the sales rank is, the more frequently it is updated.
Totally biased in favor of better selling items and prejudiced against items which are new and have no sales history.
Does it make sense? Yes if your goal is to make the easiest sales with the lowest risk of negative consequences.
Since this is intended to be an automated process, the likelihood of action by seller support is low. There may be a remedy for the problem, but if there is, who can use it is likely to be limited, in fact whether there is a remedy is likely to be a piece of information which is limited in knowledge that it exists.
If I was to offer any advice, it would be continued advertising until the sales exceed a threshold for more frequent updating and better search placement. But not every product is worth the investment.
Although Amazon has increased some barriers to entry, the marketplace effectively increases barriers once it exceeds some limits to choices.
There is a reason why many product areas are dominated by 3 or fewer brands and have been for well over 100 years. The natural forces of competition dictate it.
While I agree with you on the core point, this item is very unique and there are only 2 pages of searchable items by spec. This item is not searchable by spec compared to the other identical items we added.
The other items were searchable in 5 days, this item added at the same time is not searchable in any way. The other children of the same parent are all seachable without any sales yet, so I think its a ASIN specific issue.
