NOT fun ... but no other category I can see

So last night this happened …

I knew them all very well.

Norma was about my age.
BriLee was a sophomore, so sweet and always hugged me when I saw her
Todd was Norma’s son

Then there was Brian, also at the house and Norma’s son/BriLee’s dad who was flown out with severe burns.

This is a tough morning!

Many years ago the house next door to us burned to the ground.
Thankfully the family was at school/work.
A neighbor bravely went inside attempting to rescue and save the family dogs,
but was unable to reach them in time.
It is a horrible thing to witness. I am sorry for the loss of your neighbors/friends.

Another reason to be grateful. We all have today.

My condolences for your loss. I lost an uncle and two younger cousins to a house fire many years ago. They didn’t have smoke alarms.
So everyone use this as a reminder to check the batteries in your smoke alarm, and if they are 10+ years old, replace them. (raising hand; guilty as charged).

As am I, sadly. Yesterday I bought 2 new smoke/carbon monoxide detectors yesterday and checked my parent detectors.

We got back from a short vacation in Feb to our smoke detectors going off.
No idea how long they were going off (not tied to our alarm system - something we will remedy).
Turned off the breaker and pulled every battery to finally get them to stop chirping.
Firemen came and didn’t find anything.

Went to Lowes the next day and bought an 8-pack to replace all of them. The house was built in 2005… so 20 years… yes very guilty of not replacing after 10.

I think the one that caused the “false alarm” was the one in my daughter’s room that had a dust bunny in it. It was one of the last ones that I took the battery out of too since it is upstairs and farthest back.

Oh no! I’m so sorry. Such a horrible tragedy, so heartbreaking for those like yourself who knew the family. What a hard road ahead for the severely-injured survivor. I hope he’ll get tons of support over the next weeks and years :broken_heart:

Still just beyond believe …

I’ve been texting with a daughter of Norma’s/sister of the 2 men. Her brother is still critical with 60-65% of his body burned. He’s sedated and intubated.

I have to drive by their house a couple times ever day … :sob:

Funeral is Sat. for all 3 at the biggest church in the county to hold everyone.

SO sorry for your loss Oneida. It is overwhelming to even think about. I am having difficulty lately trying to process/comprehend all the loss people have suffered in recent years from COVID, wildfires, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods etc. Catastrophes have always been with us, of course, but they seem more intense and frequent now.
I hope that you have family and friends (including this SAS community) to help in this time of grief.

Today the other brother was taken off support and his organs donated, after a scan showed no more brain activity …

To boot we had a senior football player at the girls high school (same school as BriLee) pass while working at the stockyards and getting kicked by a horse.

This has been a ROUGH few weeks. I pass the house where the fire was twice a day…

Oh my gosh Oneida. Nightmare piled on nightmare. Heartfelt condolences to you and to your afflicted community. Lady Fortuna really needs to get busy and turn her wheel for your community, right now.
