I see this new proposal, anyone think it has feet?
Major corporations like Amazon have built billion-dollar businesses on a subcontracting system designed to shield them from responsibility. Through delivery subcontractors, corporations dictate hiring standards, delivery routes, steep productivity quotas and workplace expectations while denying that the workers making those deliveries are employees. The result is a system that leaves workers vulnerable and corporations free to avoid accountability for reckless conditions on city streets.
The legislation would also hold the company operating the facility, such as Amazon, responsible for employing the workers performing core services, such as delivery. That would give the City the tools to regulate last-mile operations and ensure major companies like Amazon are responsible for the consequences of the business decisions they make.
I had heard about it. Not sure where it will go.
Deliveries are a huge issue here in NYC. Trucks everywhere, deliveries being sorted in the streets, all manner of vehicles being used, from bicycles with trailers to huge trucks.
My building (600+ units) has had to expand the package room about 5 times in the last ten years.. They are also tracking packages in the building system, which I find a bit disturbing. Likely they are planning to charge for each package received before long.
We are in business the same as you. I would find a way to get paid for the time and labor put in handling, sorting, and, (hopefully) securing all those packages.
Tell me that you wouldn’t if you owned the property…
I understand. The building has had to devote many more staff members to package duty. There used to be one guy in a 00 sf space, now expanded to many times that size, re-configuring others spaces in the basement to accomodate the receipt of hundreds of packages a day.
