Stay warm, my Texas compatriots!

12 here this morning, feels like -3. Having grown up in Upstate NY, I love the cold, but it seems a lot of folks have a bit of PTSD from the icemageddeon of 2021. The stores were insane yesterday, and all I wanted was something to make for dinner!

Hoping the lights stay on this time!

You must be on the warm side of Texas … :smirk:
8 here and feels like -4 …

There is only one reason we’re not in Wyoming … it’s an easy guess …

And it’s heading north this week in a BIG WAY

Hope ERCOT has their stuff together this time. At least you don’t have ice…yet and you don’t have to pay Peacock to watch the game.

Stay warm and safe. Go Cowboys!

It is 16 right now here and will be like that for a couple days, which is very cold and unusual for this part of OR.

Just thankful we didn’t get what PDX area had yesterday, a lot of downed trees and lost electricity. Finger crossed things don’t get worst here.

GOOD! I actually have weeds in my landscaping and lawn right now and the tulips are coming up…

Need to put an end to all that and 17 degrees will do the trick…

12 sounds warm and toasty. Here, it got down to -12 last night. Today the sun is shining and the current temperature is a balmy +2.

Right now, all of the lower 48 except Florida and South Carolina are touched by “blue” or colder temps. For some states, this is expected, and they have safety plans and resources in place; for other states, this is unusual, and their populace sorta needs to hold their breath and bear down until it passes.

This coming week is crazy with weather challenges. Do all the things to stay safe and protect your business!

The temperature is dropping again. It is now -1 and expected to go to -10 overnight. Tomorrow’s high is predicted to be +5 and Tuesday the temps will skyrocket to +17. Woohoo!

My (disabled) sister’s pipes have frozen (again) so I have been dealing with that today. Couldn’t get anyone to come over and unfreeze them on a Sunday/holiday weekend. As cold as it is, everyone is having trouble.

More than a week ago, we had planned for my sister to come over to my house so that she could watch the Miss America pageant tonight. She doesn’t having streaming TV. But with the cold and snow, she won’t be able to make it so I’ll have to track the competition for her.

.
Whaddya mean you didn’t know the Miss America pageant is tonight!?! . LOL

I certainly did not!!

As for the pipes. Leave the water running a little during cold snaps. Works like a charm.

If the problem is isolated under a sink, leave the cabinet open or even a space heater can help get it defrosted before it’s too late so you can run that water a little. Just a drip drip drip is all that’s needed.

Good Luck, hopefully nothing bursts over at your sister’s place.

We’ve told her to do that over and over and over but it’s never sunk in. Earlier today, I wrapped a heating pad around the kitchen sink pipes but it didn’t work. A neighbor who owns rentals looked at it but wasn’t able to help. She lives in a slab house with a crawlspace. On my last trip over there today, I opened up the cover to the crawlspace. She keeps her house very warm and hopefully some of that warmth will drift into the crawlspace where the pipes are. I’ll call the HVAC companies in the morning and see who can come out and unfreeze the pipes.
.

BTW, Miss New York was just named as a semi-finalist for Miss America.

Oh, I’m so sorry. I hope nothing worse happens than frozen pipes. It’s so tricky to balance supporting independence and taking over, for adults with disabilities.

Also leaving the cabinets open under the sink might help prevent additional freezing.

The suspense is over. The new Miss America 2024 is (drumroll) … Madison Marsh, Miss Colorado.

I should say Second Lieutenant Madison Marsh, a pilot in the USAF. The first active duty competitor to vie for the crown.

With a crawl space, she may want to consider heating tape on the pipes. While we should do this, we don’t. We do run the water to keep from freezing but often they still do.

We had a dug well, that was under a building and 15 feet down with stone walls. Anytime the temps went under 15 degrees or so, I had to climb down with a ladder and thaw out the plastic pipe with a propane torch. Though this typically woke up the snakes in the underground stone walls.

We also used the torch to thaw out hot water heating pipes, and fresh water pipes when needed. The construction started in 1725 and ended in 1845, with only a well under the kitchen with a pump. And a 2 holler in the barn. Challenging to deal with.

The latest renovation will be under floor pex, filled with antifreeze, and the fresh water pipes relocated away from the leaky (as in air infiltration) foundation.

Again, let her know from an old farmer, leaving the water running is a good option. our washer was located in a back house with no insulation. We always unhooked the hoses and put them in the drain pipe and kept them running in the winter.

Hard work, but better than pooping in the barn.

Thank you for your concern. I agree with you and @ASV_Vites about leaving the water running to prevent pipes from freezing.

My sister is developmentally disabled. She cannot remember to leave the water running on her own even though the pipes have frozen in the past during extreme cold. You have to tell her to do it every_single_time. She doesn’t realize how much work it is for others to fix things for her.

Hopefully I will be able to get and HVAC person to come to her house ASAP.

Stay warm!

I use this as my excuse for not fixing the dripping faucet in the bathroom.

Be Well

Due to 2022 Christmas’s below freezing single digits, I had my oil (heating) supply slightly gel despite a “Tiger Loop” and anti-gel additive. I then added a heating tape that kicks on at 30F and pipe insulation, so hopeful when the below 30 hits this week I should be good
