So starting end of October I noticed when I dropped off a package at the ups store, they woukd scan it in at the pos, then use a finger scanner to scan the package again and stick a small label on it.
Few weeks ago I saw something about rfid on a delivery.
Checked an outbound shipment today and see this before the first regional hub scan: RFID Confirmed Pickup
So I assume ups isnt scanning everything optically anymore but rfid when avaivable? I get it, rfid doesnt have to be facing the optical scanner to be scanned, so in theory should make tracking more efficient.
Wonder how long until we are required to buy rfid labels.

Which only work is special printers which only take specific labels, and the whole thing costs a fortune?
Pretty soon, I’d say.

The only way they woukd encourage people to get all new hardware and stock would be to charge an rfid labeling fee for those shipments that dont have a tag. I dont see that happening anytime soon.

It wouldn’t be an Amazon decision, it would be from the carriers.
I don’t think the Postmaster General reads SAS

We don’t think the Postmaster General works for UPS … yet …

Back in July, I was peeling off one of those little rectangular address stickers UPS affixes to their packages so I could reuse the box when I discovered the RFID on the backside of the sticker (images). I believe UPS uses these so the drivers know what is on their truck and where to find it; I believe the RFID tells them all of the info that’s on the front of the sticker (and I think the P:, S: and I: values are the location on the truck when the truck was loaded) while also confirming that the package is on the truck.

I noticed these actually peel off like fedex stickers now.

A couple years ago I had a big fallout with Tallahassee UPS because they refused to scan packages upon pick-up.
Their reasoning was that during Covid they had developed these labels that could be tracked via satellite, and were the ones they used to distribute the vaccines, particularly in the most untrackable places (they told me Africa, I have my doubts is the Tally UPS rep would know where Africa is on a map)
In any case, the new system was “imminent” but had not been deployed. Yet, as it was “any day now”, they felt like they didn’t need to scan the boxes anymore.
Long story short, I gave them the boot and don’t use UPS anymore, but from what you’re showing, it looks like now they’re finally implementing this.
Still, the scan remains necessary until the rfid is placed, so their argument remains invalid.
