Very strange "not protected" issue with a shipment.

Have a shipment today. Going from NY to NY a 6 hour drive.
Any shipping method will get it there overnight. Order isn’t due for delivery till May 29

Initially every shipping method was open because when calculating package size Amazon uses the dimensions of 1 item when the customer ordered 10.

Put it in an 10 x 18 x18 box all of a sudden no option for ground advantage. It fell under “not protected” The price difference was $1.49 (had to ship it priority) I wasn’t going to risk a $800 order loss for $1.49

There is just no logical explanation I can see for why GA was no longer an option. The ETA was Tomorrow.

Is the delivery date May 29 or April 29?

I wonder if it was the value of the order total?

I’m guessing that the original weight when GA showed as an option was under a pound and the updated weight was over a pound? Amazon treats GA <1lb and GA 1-70lbs as separate services, and the buy shipping algorithm always treats GA 1-70lbs as slower.

@MissMeliss is correct.
Box size and weight does change the delivery speed for Ground Advantage.

For us, Cubic pricing for Ground Advantage, will be faster on Buy Shipping than 1-70lb pricing of Ground Advantage.

In the examples below, the cubic show April 30 but the non-cubic would be May 2. Both are Ground Advantage.

My box size 5 x 5 x 5 did not add 2 extra transit days for Ground Advantage.

My box size 18 x 10 x 10 added 2 extra transit days for Ground Advantage.

Maybe your box size lost Cubic pricing and caused extra days which may have pushed delivery passed 4/29 and created the Priority option.

USPS says longest side can not exceed 18 inches. We would think that USPS means up to 18 inches which would take Cubic pricing away (not available). Just like the weight on Ground Advantage goes from 1oz up to 15.99oz and then from 1lb to 70lb (which would be 69lb 15.99oz but not 70lb).

In addition, we have noticed that Amazon Buy Shipping has been irregular when it comes to Estimated Delivery Dates. We have seen Zone 4 be 5 or 6 days while a Zone 7 being 3 days for Ground Advantage 1oz to 15.99oz.

The only defense is to set your total transit time a little longer to ensure Amazon will estimate within your total transit time.
