:woman_facepalming: Got this alert today from kid’s county EMA:

“We are trying to make it better but you are in the actual way! Stay home, idiots!”

I have a friend in Alaska who flew down to FL to visit family. 3" at home, 7" in FL!

Tell your friend to pack this effing polar vortex up and take it back to AK with him or her please.

Oddly enough my MIL went to her sister’s place in FL (Fort Myers) this past Sunday which means I am tasked with running the water in her place a few times a day bc the pipes have frozen in one of her bathrooms in the past…

What a good little dripper you are

I hope the weather forecast for SoCali is correct — up to 40% chance of rain this weekend. Of course some of you will sniff at that 40%, but we haven’t had measurable rainfall since last May. It’s deep desert dry here, 6-8% humidity with strong winds, and new fires are popping up every day. We really, really need rain here.

As a papyrophile, I freakin’ love maps.

Do your children know how to read paper maps? I think my son does, but I have never asked him to navigate a car trip.

The bigger question:
Do they know how to FOLD a paper map?

I will confess that I have a map wall in my Long Hall, with framed printed maps, either current of places we’ve lived/visited, or historical of same. Only places that we’ve touched for more than an airport.

So read a paper map? Yes.
Use a paper map for navigation? IDK. It’s a good question. Maybe we need to make that an assignment on our next trip (I have a printed spiral-bound US atlas, and free rest stop maps for all bordering states).

 They’ve sure watched me struggle to do that myself!

Speaking of snow, it is now three weeks after the 14" snowfall that we received. We still have snow on the ground and there are piles along the sides of the streets but there has been significant melting. Bare spots are starting to show up in places. The streets themselves are mostly clear and people are going about their business as usual. The good news is that the predicted highs for all this week are in the upper 40’s with sunshine most every day. That should pretty much melt the rest of the snow.

I hope that others on this forum who are still dealing with snow will soon have relief too.

Stay safe and stay warm.

Here! Never had Covid (luckily) as of now :grinning: :raised_back_of_hand:
Probably mainly due to me living alone with my very little to none social life (not a good reason), and that I was used to wearing face masks to cope with my social anxiety even before Covid started (also not a good reason)… :joy:

Other than baking cookies, I recommend cooking up a big pot of chicken or vegetable soup. Warms you up from the core and adds humidity to the air every time you reheat it :grinning:

Excitedly looking forward to the balmy 47 degree weather forecast for today! We’ve had snow/ice on the ground for almost a month here in Virginia and are finally starting to see bare patches popping up here and there. May get a near total melt by end of week if forecast holds.

As of Saturday we were down to small piles/patches remaining only in shaded areas, after several days in the mid- and upper-30s–and yesterday finally saw temps in the 40s with sunshine!

Although to be fair we only got 3"-4", nothing like 14" (this time), thankfully. Very happy that things are finally clearing up for you (and hopefully @SellerFeller today, too!).

I just read that Jan 2025 will be the driest on record for NYC. Here we go again…

Nature reared its head this morning at 10:22.

We felt a strong shaking for a few seconds accompanied by a loud rumbling sound.

3.8 Earthquake 12 miles northeast of Portsmouth in York Harbor Maine,

Heard about that. There was one in NJ on Friday I believe.

Any damage by you?

No damage being reported anywhere on the local news sites.

There are earthquakes in NH and ME not all that infrequently. First time I actually felt one, and I did not know it was an earthquake for over an hour.

Don’t know if it is related, but I had to tighten the cable from my TV to my soundbar when I turned the set on tonight. Bad connection was making the soundbar auto turn off.

We had a decent one in the city last year and an aftershock a few days later that was pretty harsh… I was sleeping for the initial quake but wide awake at this desk at around 6PM for the aftershock

We had a small earthquake in Virginia 15(?) years ago centered about 40 miles from us. I had a second floor office in a three-story building and, at the time, the third floor was being gutted and remodeled for executive suites. The building was rumbling very loudly and I assumed the workers had taken out a critical support and that the third floor would be joining the second floor shortly. Thankfully, it was just a lot of rumbling with no damage done.

EDIT: I remembered this meme that came out then; looks like my guess was only a year and a half off.

I felt that one in NJ, but didn’t realize it until later. It hit just as I stopped at a light, and the van started shaking. I thought it was the engine running rough. Wasn’t until I got home and saw the news that I found out it had been a quake.

The 2024 quake I was at home, and had no doubt! Ironically, it was the wind storm the day before that had blown bricks from my chimney onto the yard, no damage from the quake.
