I’ve been off a few days. Our internet was non- existent and the cell hot spot slow.
This is what we had happen Friday night. It came within about a 1/4 mile of our house in Somerset, KY. And no, I’m not worried about people knowing where I live. If you’re that sick, karma will get you …
Much of our road is still closed off as the intersection at 27 was destroyed. Crews are trying to get new poles set and the lines replaced. MULTIPLE buildings in the path shown totally destroyed.
The gym our grands (we are raising) go to for dance and competitive cheer is gone. Only some wood framing and the concrete slab remains. Sadly she didn’t have enough renters insurance for something like this.
I have a video captured of the moment the tornado hit it, but can’t upload it.
This might work … it’s posted on Facebook by the owner of the building.
We were extremely fortunate. Why it didn’t turn due east sooner before heading to London, KY we’ll never know. The lives that were saved because it waited are probably over 100, if you look at the Hwy 27 intersection and the path down the residential area.
This is the gym up against the coop biulding about 50 yards east.
I saw my first tornado in Altus Ok. back in 2001. I noped my way out of there not a minute after my training was over.
A resident on base was like “It’s only an F0” and my reply was “F this”.
I’ve witnessed one tornado in my life (had others come close, just never saw them; either middle of night, too far, or obscured).
We were driving on I-81 in Virginia, had just gotten gas and back on the road. I looked in the rear-view mirror, then asked Nisha to look behind us and tell me what she saw. Very calmly, she said “Looks like a tornado”. (we both did a good job of conveying calm, to not freak out the other person as much as each of us felt on our own)
That was when I found out that the top speed on my Chrysler mini-van was something more than the 85mph that the speedometer went to.
oh, Oneida. I’m so sorry your community is going through this! Even when your own house is miraculously not affected, the helpless feeling for all those around you who were directly hit is almost unbearable. I know that people/ charity groups will pour in to help, but there is so much devastation happening across the middle of the country now, even the groups must be fighting that helpless feeling. My heart goes out to all of you.
We are very fortunate! Power was off only about 12 hrs. We are at the beginning of the power lines so always the first to get it back and last to lose it.
No loss of food, thankfully. Minor things like internet came back yesterday and our house sustained no damage. You know how that can go. One house gone, one house fine.
Getting around is a small pain with road closures, but all things considered not to bad.
For us the worst thing going on is the loss of the girls gym/studio for dance & cheer. The owner was renting and seems to not have had anywhere near enough insurance for what was in there. I mean who ever imagines losing a whole steel framed structure and it’s contents?
This first pic has the owner in it … just overwhelmed by it all.
I watched the video you linked. That tornado picked up that building like it was a soda can. Nobody ever expects anything like that. She looks so defeated in that image, but then the kiddos in the next remind us that the most important things that could never be replaced are safe and sound. But she will have some hard days for a long time. Prayers for your whole community.
We are in Sevierville for a comp this weekend . It’s been a rough week, but the normalcy of comp.'s is helping.
I’ve been floored at how much $ wise was in the building AND how little insurance was on it. Granted who would ever have anticipated something like this happening? We have a LONGGGGGG fund raising road ahead trying to replace things.
Wednesday storm event. Was close to same day as the “Big one” from 1981 flood. I lost a car in that one that floated several hundred yards thru my Apartment complex parking area.
