We have only recently been affected by orange skies from Canadian wildfires. This is quite new to us.
I live about 10 blocks from where this picture was taken.
SHHHEEEEETTTTT.. That is a Thursday afternoon in July out here.
We even have a camera system so you can watch yours or other communities burn all summer.
The picture was from a never before seen and not ever seen since orange sky in NYC.
My sister and her husband, who live in northern Utah, bought a condo in southern Utah to escape the poor air quality during the winter months.
Sometimes I tell my son I am glad I am old.
When one of this haboo storms comes through, you canât see the house across the street âŚ
We got stuck on I-40 coming down out of Flagstaff AZ for 4 hours waiting for one of these to pass as they shut down the highway because you couldnât see.
Here in West Texas we get these dirt storms almost yearly during the spring. You smell the dirt, taste the dirt, and find the dirt in every crack and crevasse in your house and body.
When I managed grocery stores in the LA area, I had the pleasure of cleaning up aisles of emptied shelving from those little shakers. Long Beach and Northridge were active areas at the time.
Actually, the AQI in NYC reached 485. The scale only goes to 500. That day was one of the worst air quality days recorded ever, for anywhere in the world. Worse than ever recorded in Mumbai, Beijing, or many other places famous for lousy air. (but I think Selg;s picture might have been from one of the nicer days)
Except for Texas⌠Wouldnât be making every effort, straining every muscle to return there, despite bodily ills and inconvenience, it wasnât true (at least in this nativeâs biased opinion). Every person probably feels the same about the land of their birth/growinâ up!!
Nope, not every person. As a native born Texan, I can safely say that there are places where the grass is actually greener. I donât hate Texas, but only because I have been stuck in Mississippi and Louisiana to know better. ![]()
Donât know much about Mississippi but there are good parts in Louisianaâthe River Road, New Orleans; the food/heritage but wouldnât want to live there, now. due to rising crime and water levels. .
Despite a romantic but ignorant young marriedâs dreams of buying a patio home in the French Quarter!! (Way, way outta of our price-range even then!)
Simon Winchester on Tumbleweeds:
Interesting-I love Winchesterâs books!!.
I know where some of these towns mentioned in the article are located!
Here in our part of AZ, not too many tumbleweeds. As one drives east into New Mexico and West TX, run into plenty which get stuck under a carâs bumper!!
Our worrisome weather issue in AZ is a Haboob-or heavy dust storms. This derives from the Arabic word, since the same is seen in the Sahara Desert! The areas where Phoenix and Tucson were unthinkingly plunked in the 19th century by non-eco-friendly railroaders, grafters, gamblers and frontier-builders have only been tamed in some spots- still sandy soils aplenty where the dust storms are born!
Scary to be in a car when they hit. Just get over on the shoulder, hope any driver ahead has on his blinking caution lights and pray!!
Sounds equal or worse than driving in heavy rain or snow.
The wind, she be a howling today!
Low cloud fog mist here ⌠Sunday night is when we might see some snow âŚ
Wind here was blowing around 20mph, with gusts in the high 30s.
I barely managed to take a walk, but while doing so, I saw one of my neighbors picking today as the day to install their new lawn decorations for Xmas. Who does that???
There are some sections of Brooklyn, NY where Christmas lights are of great importance:
Those in the north east take care. This storm seems to be shifting and morphing fast
Iâm ready for it! One of our neighbors (who weâve been shoveling snow for for 18 years for free) actually gave me the remote to their empty garage so we can keep one of our cars inside for the stormâŚ. Wifeyâs new car won the prize even though I really wanted my STi in thereâŚ. lol
One snowflake on one of the 20 sensors drives the whole car insane with this warning light or that oneâŚ.
Iâm not sure what weâre gonna do. Besides the cataract surgery, Iâm also dealing with a rotator-cuff injury, so I wonât be shoveling anything. Hopefully one of the neighborâs kids will want to make a few bucks.
