Moch of Europe is experiencing temps near 100 degrees

A significant number of places have reported over 100; with quite a few “All-time” records. I’ve heard speculation that it will be worse than 2003, when 15000 died from the heat in France alone.

Considering that many places in Europe start struggling with heat at temps that we in the US shrug off*, temps in upper 90s or above are seriously bad.

(I was listening to a podcast from the UK chatting about how hot it was; it was the same temp as here, where I was taking a walk because it was finally cool enough to go out).

Personally, I’m dreading next week. We replaced our dead van, which means we’re catching up on clean-outs. 6 in the upcoming week (most small), with the big one being on a day now forecast to hit 100. It’s gonna be a long day, with lots of ice water.
Plus I’m thinking that July 4 will be spent at home in the A/C watching everything on TV; a shame, I would like to go see the tall ships sail up the Hudson, but not in 95° weather.

On July 3 and 4, much of the nation east of a line from Montana to Texas will face some sort of extreme heat risk, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration projections. They include:

• High risk: Portions of the Middle and Lower Mississippi, Ohio, and Tennessee Valleys, Great Lakes, Appalachians, Mid-Atlantic, and Southeast on Friday, July 3.
• Moderate risk: Much of the central and eastern Continental United States on July 3-4.
• Slight risk of extreme heat for much of the same areas for July 5-6.
• A slight risk of high winds is possible for portions of California, the Pacific Northwest, Northern Intermountain, and northern Great Basin on July 3-4.

At home, please watch the weather, prepare and plan, and be mindful of pets both indoors and outdoors. Hydrate yourself and animals more than usual (even if you’re not thirsty), minimize electricity usage to not overload the grids, consider a generator, find out ahead of time if your community will offer cooling stations and transportation, stock up on ice packs and other first aid supplies, and stay indoors. Check on your neighbors.

At work, consider offering a water or cooling towel to your carriers and delivery persons, and a chance to sit under a fan for a minute. Make back up plans for getting orders out and increase expected handling times. Watch yourself and co-workers for signs of heat stroke or heat exhaustion. Encourage WFH if you can.

I learned yesterday that ConEd sucks.

We are having all sorts of issues here with our power for the last 24 hours. They won’t even register our outage reports on their stupid outage map…

I’ve lived here for 20 years, no real problems before and this isn’t the first “heat dome” - whatever the hell that is…

Just a handful of circuits not working - VERY VERY DIM lights and LEDs that won’t even turn on.

Thought we had a phase issue so I moved one of the affected circuits (HOT - without turning off the power) to the other side of the bus bar and same thing…

Underground power can be great until it isn’t…

We aren’t the only house experiencing weird things and the community pool around the block is shut down because they don’t have enough juice to run the pumps…

This is insane and the weather is just getting started in terms of the heat.

This was at 2:00 PM yesterday at about 1,200’ elevation in western Virginia. It did go to 106 briefly just after i snapped the picture. And, no, it’s not a dry heat.

And while there are a lot of jokes about that, it makes a HUGE difference.

I moved to NJ from Arizona. When I came for my job interview, it was 97. I thought I was going to die! (thankfully missed my plane, which pushed out 5 minutes before I got there; pushed back 7 hours later).

Back in Arizona, when I left work, didn’t think I needed the A/C in the car; just the windows open. Felt fine.
It was 111.

I had long hoped that for July 4 I would go to some place overlooking the Hudson River (probably Fort Lee Historical Park; even with $20 parking, despite my “Old Fart” free pass) to watch the Tall Ship Parade. Or at least check out the local festivities at the county park down the road (concerts and food trucks all day, fireworks at night).
But with temps forecast at 97° and humidity out the ying-yang, looks like I’ll be staying home and watching stuff on TV. I’m thinking only trip out will be a run to the liquor store for more rum (It’s American, so in the spirit!).

On the bright side, I think I’ll take at least a half-day off from business; maybe play some poker and work on some YouTube videos that have been neglected.

That would have been awesome to watch the tall ships coming in. It’s certainly something you don’t see every day.

I’ve been on two tall ships myself although they weren’t moving - the USS Constitution in Boston and the HMS Victory (Admiral Nelson’s ship) in Portsmouth, England. Both tours were fascinating and memorable.

For the past 5-6 days we have had temperatures in the 90’s with high humidity here in NE Kansas. Overnight the temps fell only to the low 80’s. I’ve been staying mostly inside. Tonight, the temps have broken! A light gentle rain has entered our area and temperatures have plummeted to 68 degrees. I turned off the A/C and opened the windows. I sat out on the porch in the cool darkness and listened to the rain and thunder. What a difference!

Holy Mother Of Pearl… Just drove back from the catskills mountain region (MIL’s Summer House). We got our power back in Queens on Friday after almost 3 days of bull ■■■■ from ConEd - so was able to go.

100 miles of non-stop torrential rain in my low to the ground Suby STi. I’ve been driving legally for 30 something years. I HAVE NEVER experienced rain like that for such a prolonged period of time.

Happy to be home and glad we are getting this rain. The property upstate was scorched!

Happy to report that the central air in our house took a monster ■■■■ last night. Breaker sizzling and all…

Took the unit apart, compressor is grounded to its own case so that’s that. It’s shot, after working flawlessly for the last 20 years. Unit sounded perfect, even a few days ago.

Undoubtedly failed because of all the voltage variation ConEd was doing last week.

Some of our outlets had 110 volts instead of 120. Others 72.

But the AC worked fine. Never bothered to test for 240 volts on the units bc I didn’t want to electrocute myself.

Con Edison is, without a doubt, the worst power company on the planet. It’s been over a week since the heat wave broke and their outage map still shows countless problems in 4 of the 5 boroughs. No other electricity provider is having problems like this now.

New heat wave coming soon and thanks to massive, unnecessary regulations, we are looking at a $10,000 bill to fix this. Entire unit (inside and out) has to be replaced because R22 was banned, and it’s compatible friend 410A was banned too, just a few years after it was introduced.

We have a couple portables trying to cool the house but they aren’t working well. 22K BTU’s is no substitute for 40K. Hoping to be back with AC at some point this week. Installer is coming in the morning to take some measurements.

Looking forward to exiting NYC, the first chance we get.

Kids are sleeping in my MILs house (upstairs), which has the same unit (but it works)…

Wifey and I have a portable in our room, so all good there thankfully.

I can’t wait to have highly flammable R454 gas flowing through my house with the new unit… That will probably be banned next year when they come up with the next thing that’s better for the planet…

Giving myself a 4 leaf clover for luck, bc apparently that actually works… @booknut7 haha

Guy was just here. He says he might be able to get the compressor and if we change it, it will basically be a brand new unit because I have replaced every other serviceable part myself over the last 3 years.

Also said he has a 25 year supply of R22 hoarded away. He bought $40K of it right before it was banned.

Save A TON of money if he can get the compressor. And since this GAS already exists, we are actually doing less harm to the planet by keeping the old unit instead of trashing it AND the inside unit / furnace.

He’s making some calls to see what he can do but also said he’s replaced a few R22 compressors this summer already so it can be done.

I’ve become pretty chummy with this guy over the last 10 years of servicing our unit and my family’s and my neighbors (referrals). Guess he’s doing me a favor instead of doing the typical HVAC ripoff routine (because they all do it)…

My neighbors identical to ours unit went last summer and he replaced it with a 410 unit that would work with their indoor unit / coil.
