Saw that… Just a giant blob of rain that’s barely moving, if at all…
The comment I heard somewhere about south Texas was that they could get a full summer worth of rain in the next day or two.
Scary.
A friend of mine was in San Antonio last week. I’m glad she’s home now.
Remember a few summers ago when the sky turned orange in NYC? I had never seen anything like it before. Is this happening again? My sis lives in northern Utah, and they leave for their condo in St. George in southern Utah every winter due to air polluntion, but now western wildfires find them in northern Utah during the summers…and the Utah legislature has approved a huge data center in a nearby county that will use more in the way of water and electric resources than now used by the entire state of Utah.
I do remember the orange quite well. Messed up drone video footage we were taking (with an expensive professional) at our factory.
So far it’s just hazy grey at times. These fires are too far away to turn us orange this year.
I also hope the orange skies of a few summers ago do not happen again here. Is your factory nearby?
North of the city but not that far. But closer to the smoke back then. It was really bad up there - past the Tappan Zee bridge.
Today was nothing like a few years ago; the light was kinda orange, but the sky looked just a bit hazy; not the solid-orange view like you would see in Star Trek. I don’t think it’s going to get that bad this time, but certainly unpleasant. I think I saw somewhere to expect AQI around 150-180, although I think that was for north of the city.
Good news is that it will be short lived. Clearing out by Friday, and Saturday is looking much cooler, although sadly rain and possible thunder, which will put a damper on my plans to go to the beach volleyball event at Central Park (my count might be off, but I think about 6-7 Olympians competing)

Plug for Watch Duty a non profit that aggregates fire/weather/earthquake data and pushes it out to everyone. I volunteer for them and its great if you have loved ones and want to keep an eye on things like fires, floods, etc. or get an alert to any in your county or where loved ones live.

Probably leftovers from the 1969 fire on the river flowing into it.

I remember it pretty well since it was in a lot of news stories around the country.
Well, I can verify that, as of noon on Wednesday, the smoke is starting to hit northern NJ, pretty much right in line with predictions.
But it’s not quite like a few years ago. This is more like being in a campground in the evening; visible smoke at ground level, and the smell is strong enough that Nisha could smell it on my clothes after I went out to the van to put the mail in; about 2 minutes outside total.
And based on predictions, this is just the start.
It’s not going to be pretty.
Just generally foggy with smoke here in NYC, but predicted to get worse. WaPo has us in the Very Unhealthy Zone, a notch below Hazardous.
Apparently the upside to the smoke is it will suppress afternoon violent thunderstorms this week

Last time, NYC was deep into the dark maroon color, with AQI hitting (IIRC) in the 480s, higher than places like Beijing, Mexico City, and other chronically polluted cities. (scale only goes to 500).
So getting in the low 200s (very unhealthy), while really bad, is not as severe as last time.
Let’s hope that is as bad as it gets.
Currently (4:00) it’s dense enough that there are no shadows; just even orange tinted light. But not on par with 2023’s alien looking skies.

So far not so happy. 61 degrees at the vents… Used to be in the upper 40’s.
Hopefully just breaking in and recovering from the giant hot thermal mass of not having AC for 5 days…
Also… Return air is 8 degrees hotter than normal. So delta isn’t what it was but that makes up for a chunk of the difference…
