Tonight’s T-storm sounds very strong from my perch in Manhattan. Hope all is well for those affected. There have been dire warnings all day, starting with 2 AM emails, and emails begging civilians to clean local catch basins.
Years ago, back before our windows were replaced, a storm like this would have had us rushing with old towels and rags to all of our windows to keep the rain from washing down over the window sills and damaging the plaster walls below. (No sheetrock here, back in the 1960s, when our building was constructed with proper plaster walls–we have unions here.).
You and your wife already know that waiting and not rushing to leave a venue that may be in the midst of difficult circumstances can be a good thing in circumstances such as those today. Hope all come home safe!
Yep, fits well in “Weather”; because really, is there a better predictor of fully cloudy skies an possible thunderstorms?
Funny story; many years ago, I think I was possibly still a teen, there was a total lunar eclipse that was timed right so that we had an eclipse party at the astronomy clubs observatory. There was even a TV crew there covering it.
Of course, shortly after first umbral contact, the clouds moved in, and never broke. But totality was going to be during the 11:00 news, so they wanted a live shot.
So when the time came, they had me pose as if I was looking through the big telescope, but done so hurriedly that there wasn’t time to grab an eyepiece, for the background.
So the report is that the clouds are totally blocking out anything we could see, sadly there’s nothing to really look at, but still there I am being the moron looking through the scope at the clouds without even having an eyepiece in the scope!
(but we had some good beer on hand, so not a total loss).
Update:
I reckon it’s deep into the partial phase now; and it’s not raining, but still 100% solid cloud cover. But by the deepest part of the eclipse in about 25 minutes, the severe t-storm on the radar should be here!
In much of the country, at least the clouds would look darker. Here I just see the reflections of all the lights of NYC (I’m less than 9 miles from Times Square; it’s obvious when you look up)
So we had some thunderstorms in the area. Nope … we didn’t get any rain. It’s was just all around us. Could see the lightning and could hear the thunder.
But we didn’t miss out on everything. The lightning must of hit a main line somewhere as we have been without electricity for an hour and a half now. Electric company says it will be another 2 hours on the last update.
Thank god we got a generator for lights and fans (it was a 100 today and still in the 90’s now).
