Meteorological summer is June 1 to August 31, so ends tomorrow. There are 8 “bad” locations on the list but only 2 “good”. It’s been an exhausting summer weather-wise for most of us, physically and mentally.
Good luck… I’ve reported the tree in front of my house to the NYC Parks Department countless times. I even put in a claim to get my insurance deductible back for damage it caused to my car after a large limb fell on it. They put me through so much crap to try and get that $1000 that I gave up…
This tree appears quite healthy but it has a huge rotten hole in it from where a big chunk was cut off 15 years ago. It must extend 70% through the tree horizontally and 12 feet down to the base. There’s tons of saw dust coming out of a small hole in the base from carpenter ants eating it alive.
It’s not a matter of if it will come crashing down but when. They say they inspected it on each complaint and say it’s fine. Well documented for when it does fall and crushes 2 of our cars in the process. It’s also going to take down the street light because there’s a limb 2 inches on the backside of the street light pole.
Looking forward to it coming down. It’s lifting our sidewalk and destroying that zone of the sprinkler system, lifting the pipes out of the ground.
Our main problem is that it’s now rubbing against the gutters on the house; we had a tree guy out for a different tree, and he said he couldn’t touch the city tree. And I can’t trim a limb 20+ feet in the air.
When I contacted the town, someone came by just a few days later and removed some of the dead branches over the street; they said the rest would be done in a couple of weeks. So we’ll just have to wait and see.
Other than that, it’s a really nice tree, if you ignore the leaves getting into every room of the house in the fall!
I trim our city tree all the time myself. Nobody knows the difference.
I’m kinda shocked that the tree guy wouldn’t take care of this for you considering the city tree is doing damage to your property.
The law, as far as I know it, is that you can trim someone else’s tree as it relates to part that’s over your property. You just have to pay for it, not the owner of the tree.
That might be different for city trees but regardless, nobody is going to know… City doesn’t survey every tree to understand which parts have been trimmed and by whom.
Lived in a house in Southern California where the city tree was lifting and cracking the sidewalk which was also in the city easement. The city came by and cited us for the lifting/cracking sidewalk and told us that we needed to fix the sidewalk as it presented a trip hazard. We ended up having to replace that section of sidewalk and, when we did, we cut the tree root out that was growing under it. We created a rock salt barrier under the new sidewalk. The house was sold and we moved … can’t say if the tree survived the rock salt …
Oh, that’s the same here. Anything happens to the sidewalk, city comes and fixes it and adds the charge to your property taxes for the next period.
Depends on the state, but most states have “air rights” laws where you own the air above your property, and are free to trim any tree that crosses into said property, city tree or not.
Yep, in most states
If I were able to trim it, I would. But the limb that needs trimming is higher than the house; my 24’ ladder won’t reach the roof in the front.
And while true that the city won’t know, a licensed contractor is unlikely to be willing risk it for a minor job like this.
Cool … so we’re going to declare our “air rights” above our property to be a no fly zone … should be beneficial in extending duck season …
These days with drones and cameras, I bet those air rights laws might be very beneficial.
To our fellow Sellers in the affected areas, please stay safe and have your backup plans at the ready for possible loss of power and delayed shipping–and take care of yourselves! Excessive heat is a sneaky enemy that too many folks ignore or dismiss.
Or come to NYC. It’s 59 at the moment… Very refreshing.
Or come to West Texas where we can hit both 100+ and 59 temperatures in the same day …
Wishing everyone in the path of Helene good luck. I know there are members here in the direct path of this potential major storm.
Please be careful and prepare in every way possible.
Steve
I’m in the inland path and will be fiiiiine but it won’t stop panic brain doing prep stuff for it anyway.
This thing may cause widespread inland disruption so anyone anywhere near the path, get ready now for your business and your home!
Hopefully you’re right, but don’t get too complacent. I was in Charlotte NC, about 180 miles inland, when Hugo hit. We were lucky; we got our power back on in only 8 days; I knew people who didn’t get power restored for over 2 months. Plus for a couple of days, many roads were closed due to downed trees or power poles. Didn’t really get much coverage, since other areas hit far worse, but was a powerful lesson in how you don’t have to be right at the coast to suffer.
Just looked at some of the updates on this storm. Asheville NC is expecting record flooding, and even Boone is under a Tropical Storm Watch. I think that there are going to be a lot of people caught off-guard by just how far-reaching this thing is gonna be.
Brother-in-law is in direct line of the eye just north of Tallahassee. We spoke with him this morning and he has had enough rain already that the dirt road to his house is already under water (and that is near the Georgia Florida border).
When Maria, destroyed Puerto Rico in 2017, home to 4 million Americans, slicing the island directly in half, and wiping out electrical grid for 6 months, besides damaging dams, bridges, sewage, water and public systems we were all grateful [mod edit: for help but only received] ultimately about a quarter of what Ida 2021 on the mainland, got though it was only quarter a damaging.
I sincerely hope [removed] the US, takes the lives of the Americans in Florida with dignity, respect, and HELP, that I am sure will be desperately needed.
