This; so much. The story of the used bookseller.
Besides selling books here, we sell other things on various platforms (I think 6 total, but not sure). If sales stopped for a month across all platforms, I don’t think that we would be close to catching up with all of the stuff waiting to be processed and listed; and that’s not even mentioning things like fixing the broken drawer in the bathroom, etc.
Might be a bit tough paying mortgage, etc., but I would have no problem keeping busy.
I too would need at least a month to catch up.
Maybe we should thank the bomb-throwers. ![]()
Bankers AND booksellers will benefit.
Make that 59.99999999999% since I am in vacation mode for the next two weeks!

I don’t think circumstances are such that we see something like the Croissant Revolution. At best, people will change their status on Fb…in other words, I don’t think we’ll see anything close to resembling a real boycott. TBF, SBUX was boycotted in most recent memory and quite casual memory, I’d have to look at their financials, but, apparently, they suffered huge losses.
“Thoughts and Prayers”
Hard to separate the effects of a boycott from the other problems with their business model. Starbucks had a damned good run, but the world changes.
My SIL designed a lovely facebook post about boycotting Amazon not just on the 28th but to consider “a more permanent ban.”
Took a ton of restraint not to comment, she’s an “empty barrel” as my mother calls her so I just took it as her being “her”. Again.
Someone commented on her post asking , “doesn’t your SIL her kids have a couple of stores on Amazon?” That comment went unanswered.
This morning I noticed the post was gone.
Interesting what people will do and say without thinking.
My feeling? There were people who wanted to move away from Amazon for a while, whether it be because it’s just too easy to spend money (and they choose not to admit their weakness) or whatever “reason of the day” fits for them. And those will go away, maybe permanently, and some boycott for the day but will purchase again. Probably the next day.
One thing I am wondering however - so Amazon says they are no longer DEI yet I see a lovely combination of drivers still delivering to both home and business. Was that statement just to appease and continue with “business as usual?”
Trying to make sense of so much becomes exhausting.
Sounds like a very tempting idea dwat
Not to get into politics, but I believe “not being DEI” means that hiring is not based firstly on race, religion, etc. It does not mean they no longer employ those people, more that hiring from here on will be on merit rather than race, disability, etc.
I believe that DEI means different things different places, but it can go far beyond affecting hiring decisions, sometimes even to include things like employee training on dealing with people who may be different than the typical customer. (not to say that it always does; but Nisha has to go through several hours per year on just this type of thing)
People are complicated.
You will often see this in the public sphere where identity/tribal signaling takes front and center stage to almost everything - this permeates into every aspect of marketable content. I was watching a debate recently on Jubilee and they often host 25:1 debates - often the ideational signaling to policy was brought up but not a single policy was discussed.
It’s like saying “thank you for your service” to members of the armed forces, as an easy signaling action, but being oblivious to the plight of 30,000 vets who were/are homeless. Obviously, then someone will point to the reduction of the vet homeless population by the numbers since 2010, but those numbers are like marketplace pulse articles where the numbers only give us broad sense of what’s going on. which we lament on this very forum as being highly inaccurate and not accounting for other very quantifiable data. Often, even with scrupulous analysis these discussions, then, can’t additionally account for multi-factorial variables that are contributing factors to a cause/effect of some sort. This is not to say things shouldn’t be discussed; I’m saying they should, but with enough humility to know that we probably only got it right half way and we should probably critique our beliefs constantly lest they become dogma.
Almost across every topic you see this sort of dissonance. I have no answers; just that it exists everywhere.
We are teetering on a hot button topic/off topic line here. Not calling anyone out, just sayin
For the past few months, Amazon and MakerPlace have been sadly slower than optimal, so I finally followed through on my long-time threats to re-start my eBay account to list jewelry destash and vintage, almost none of which is listed on other platforms. In 6 weeks I’ve taken pictures and listed 250 items and I made 4 sales!!! for a whopping total of $20 net. Yeah, control your jealousy
At least I’ve been productively busy. Plus, I cleaned two entire rooms of my house
which is not nearly as exciting as taking pictures of jump rings.
stupid, the will just buy what they need before and skip a trip to the store with well stocked pantries…
I saw that and had a nice laugh. I’m sure the timing is totally coincidental.
As it is for me right now, zero from zero is still zero.
