Why are usps ground advantage prices changing every other day

We saw our Ground Advantage less than 1lb jump again this week and wondered why.

USPS Ground Advantage prices change frequently in 2026 due to a series of overlapping baseline hikes, time-limited surcharges, geographic/zone adjustments, and temporary peak holiday pricing rather than daily random fluctuations.

The major changes driving this volatility include:

  • January 2026 Standard Increase: Ground Advantage base rates increased by an average of 7.8%.
  • April 2026 Time-Limited Surcharge: A temporary 8% transportation-related price increase took effect on April 26, 2026, and runs through January 17, 2027.
  • July 2026 Sub-1-lb & Structure Shake-Ups: Sub-1-pound commercial tiers were restructured, and rural/offshore destination ZIP codes faced steeper single-tier jumps, alongside adjustments to dimensional (DIM) weight divisors.
  • October 2026 Geographic & Holiday Peak Adjustments:
    • A shift toward expanded destination-based geographic rate groups rolled out in mid-October 2026.
    • Temporary peak holiday pricing kicked off on October 4, 2026, through January 17, 2027, adding weight- and zone-based surcharges that range from $0.40 up to over $20.00 depending on the service and distance.
    • An additional round of adjustments rolled out around October 25, 2026, further altering weight- and zone-based costs.

Sellers on platforms like eBay, Amazon FBM, or Shopify often experience these cumulative updates as near-constant price swings because different shipping calculators, zone-coding rules (such as rural versus urban ZIP code tracking), and seasonal surcharges apply dynamically at checkout.

We had a Zone 3 that was $5.38 a few weeks ago show as $5.54 the day we got the order and then was $5.63 on the day it shipped two day later. USPS price changing is becoming a nightmare. Since Zone 8 rural price is now $8.95, we think we are just going to set our shipping cost to $10.00 to absorb any more USPS price increases from now to the end of January 2027.

Didn’t they also add a “fuel surcharge” based on the current cost of fuel that was going to adjust every few days?

I would love to do that, but Amazon would flag every item for high price violation. I adjusted shipping to $9.24 as the remote surcharge was $8.50. Amazon flagged 1/2 my inventory as a high price violation.

On 102626, USPS published a “Fuel Surcharge Implementation FAQ” @ https://postalpro.usps.com/fuel-surcharge-faqs.

It was removed 102826, and so that page now returns a “Page Not Found” 404 error, but this article does a fair job of explaining what it said:

The road’s getting rockier…

We saw that … the only logical thing for us to do is to re-focus on our own site and eliminate “Amazon fees” from the equation and hope that helps relieve against the USPS price jumps.

ETA -“The US Postal Service plans to introduce a new fuel surcharge on domestic packages beginning January 2027, with rates changing weekly based on diesel and jet fuel prices”

A 53" trailer fully loaded with 8"x8"x8" can carry around 10,000 packages or possibly 100,000 #1 padded mailers. Traveling 3000 miles (basically coast to coast) will use on average 500 gallons. 500@ $7/gal =$3500

10,000 packages @ say $8 = $80,000 x .08 surcharge yields $6400 EXTRA for fuel.

Of course a 53’ trailer can contain virtually an unlimited combination of package sizes and not all 53’ trailers for USPS would travel coast to coast. Me thinks an 8% fuel surcharge is a bit hefty

For 6 day Priority Mail service and late GA deliveries. They do break less items than UPS and I like to support our constitutionally required postal service to stave off privatization, but this is getting ridiculous.

And I keep hearing the wars over. Weird.

Maybe some day it will be. And when that day comes - Amazon will announce (No FBA Fulfilment fee increases this year) - but they won’t take the surcharge off. Just like last time there was a surcharge.

Their theoretical costs go down, and ours go up. But they make us feel good by saying no increases. LOL and FML

Are you awake - is this a dream?

Yeah, I’m awake. Maybe you missed the rest of my post.

Just saying that history will repeat itself and the pain we feel now will never go away.

This is a real killer for us ‘Free Shipping’ folks. I’d prefer if the Free Shipping myth went away and buyers were charged actual postage cost to their location like eBay does with calculated shipping. As far as I know, they calculate the rural surcharges and then the rural buyers are paying them, not everyone.
Trying to accurately set up templates and monitor all the rate changes for modification that leads to high price alert listing suppression is a royal PIA.

will Amazon do the same with FBA Fees? Or will they use fee stability as another sales tool to promote FBA, until we’ve all converted all our skus and then the rates will change weekly.

I probably belong on an Entitled Sellers thread

Unlikely. I believe there’s something in the TOS that states rates change with some level of notice (time). Of course they reserve the right to ■■■■ their partners whenever they are in the mood so I’m probably wrong.

They can always update that time quantity in the TOS, say to 6 days.

Or every 6 days, or seconds.

Your belief is correct; the period is 15 days, as may be seen in Section 15 (the “Modification” clause) of the ASBSA (link):

Amazon has been known to honor that more in the breach than in the observance - many times - by hanging its hat on the next portion of said clause:

There’s a reason why Díck The Butcher so-infamously said this:

“The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers”

Maybe USPS is going to be as annoying as they can, as often as they can, until they can eliminate Saturday deliveries.

Reality check

We just had a repeat customer.
Item bought was the same package size and weight going to the same address.
Prior purchase was July 2025 and USPS label cost $4.14.
This purchase (16 months later) … the USPS label cost is $5.80.

The increase from $4.14 to $5.80 is a 40.10% increase.

You would think they should be working their way back to break even.

The increase from $4.14 to $5.80 is a 40.10% increase.

Can you imagine the pushback you would get on the NSFE even with the explanation of how that is calculated?

As ‘luck’ would have it, a memory popped up on Facebook today. It was a story from 5 years ago on Quartz (which I had never heard of before then) titled " The five universal laws of human stupidity"

I’ll save you the trouble of reading the whole thing –

“In 1976, a professor of economic history at the University of California, Berkeley published an essay outlining the fundamental laws of a force he perceived as humanity’s greatest existential threat: Stupidity.”

Law 1: Always and inevitably everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals in circulation.

Law 2: The probability that a certain person be stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person.

Law 3. A stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person or to a group of persons while himself deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses.

Law 4: Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals. In particular non-stupid people constantly forget that at all times and places and under any circumstances to deal and/or associate with stupid people always turns out to be a costly mistake.

Law 5: A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person.

And its corollary:

A stupid person is more dangerous than a bandit.

And a sad conclusion – " “Such change in the composition of the non-stupid population inevitably strengthens the destructive power of the [stupid] fraction and makes decline a certainty,” Cipolla concludes. “And the country goes to Hell.”"

The whole story – https://qz.com/967554/the-five-universal-laws-of-human-stupidity

Lake’s Law Number 6

Social Media increases the spread of stupidity geometrically.

Corollary to Law Number 6, every generation of social media site is geometrically a greater benefit to stupidity than the previous generation.
