Does this message from Amazon mean that I didn't sell enough?

Hi,

I signed up to sell on both Canada and Mexico 3-4 years ago. Lately (since mid last year), I’ve seen more of this email in my mailbox:

Does it mean that I didn’t sell enough to cover for the Seller fee to sell in Canada? The correct action for me is to disable the Canadian market and only sell in the US market, right? Thank you.

Have you looked at “Payments” under your Canada account?

What do you see there?

Is your pricing set as such that it doesn’t cover fees and shippng?

Are you advertising in Canada via Amazon?

Are these charges coming from this advertising?

If so, how do you have your Canadian advertising set up to be paid? … through account balance? … through account balance with credit card back up? … through just credit card?

If a credit card is involved, does it have a limit on purchases from Canada?

Are you get payment distributions from sales? … and these charges at the same time?

Knowing the answer to these variables might answer your question.

I have never setup CA or MX and have a balance due for VAT in CA for a few bucks.

Maybe that is it?

If you do FBA and allow Amazon to sell to CA with your product, this could be it for you.

Limit on purchases? I don’t remember limit customers from purchasing my products.

Thanks for the suggestion. I just check the Payment section. Even in the months that were positive during Q4, Amazon fees were pretty high (see screenshot below). Selling in Canada doesn’t seem to be worth it.

Yes I do FBA and allow Amazon to sell to CA and MX. It used to be a good way to make more sales years ago. I think Amazon hiked up fees and it seems to be not worth it now.

The addition of costs imposed by DST legislation (“DST” in this usage is an acronym for “Digital Services Tax” - shown as “Digital Services Fee” in your screenshot of the Payments Dashboard) in various nations - enforcement of which came into effect on Amazon @ the beginning of Q1 2025, as is explained in the SHC’s (“Seller Help Content”) page Digital services fee (link) is but one of the ever-burgeoning burdens borne by sellers who make Offer-Listings in non-domestic Amazon Global marketplaces which must be accommodated by their bottom line.

Presuming that Amazon’s automated bookkeeping mechanisms have calculated DST correctly for that pay period, in accordance with the guidelines laid out in the aforementioned SHC page, it would appear that your sales in the Canadian Marketplace are small, so I’d be first inclined towards looking into why the oft-nebulous “Other”-category fee is significantly larger.

Amazon’ doesn’t make it particularly easy to ferret out such information - GAAP principles are adhered to for its own financial statements to a much larger degree than is applied for its Selling Partner’s access to the pertinent data - so you may have to collate that from more than one report; one functionality that our own bean-crunchers have found useful as a starting point for such an exercise is the SKU Economics Report (link).

Thanks Dogtamer and everyone. Frankly the Canadian sales are tiny, I would prefer to not spend more time to investigate the fees of “Other”. I asked Seller central AI assistant how to stop selling in Canada/Mexico and only sell in the US. The AI gave me 2 different answers:

(1) Check to see if the account is North America Unified Account. If it is, downgrade the Canadian to an individual account. If it’s not, close the Canadian seller account.

(2) Switch Selling Plans. Select the option to switch to a Professional selling plan for the United States marketplace only.

Doing anything on the account level always scares me. I’ve heard of many horror stories when things gone wrong. Which one do you think is the right/safe way to stop selling in Canadian market? Thanks.

  1. This is awful, destructive, and frankly appalling advice. Just ask @Tried_Tested what happens when someone (even if it’s not the seller!) tries to close one marketplace in a unified account.
    DO NOT DO THIS

(EDIT: I just realized that the advice was only to close the account if it was not a unified account. This makes their advice less terrible and more bad. Closing an account is still permanent, and you may want to sell in Canada in the future. Do not close the account. )

  1. I’m not even sure this is possible. Also, pointless.

To stop selling in .ca:
If FBM, put the marketplace on vacation mode. I would also delete all your listings from the marketplace to avoid any of the numerous issues that can result from having listings in your catalog.
If FBA, stop sending product. You can either sell out, then delete the listings (same reasons as above) or recall what inventory you have left and then delete the listings.
If FBA using remote fulfillment, opt out of the program, and that should do the trick. You should still delete any listings in the .ca marketplace.

Also, make sure your Build International Listings settings are off.

Put Canada and Mexico on vacation.

If you are selling FBA, go into the FBA settings and uncheck the box that gives Amazon permission to sell your products internationally. We don’t do FBA so hopefully others here that do will join in with more detailed info on the how to.

Do not do this … it will cause you the same pain that @Tried_Tested went through with Brazil.

Got it. No account closing.

I believe this is the best way. However I forgot the name of the program. Is it nebulous something? I’ll wait for more people to reply and hopefully someone knows the name of the program.

It’s called Remote Fulfillment.
From your FBA dashboard, the Inventory dropdown has an option for Remote Fulfillment with FBA (second option from the bottom.) The second tab in Remote Fulfillment is Marketplace Enrollment. You can deactivate .ca from there.

Thank you! I found it! However it seems that Amazon wouldn’t allow seller to opt-out of the Build International Listing (BIL) program. Even though it showed optional, the checkbox was grayed out.

To handle your BIL settings, you need to go to the BIL page. That option is only to quickly turn on BIL for a marketplace you are now enrolling in Remote Fulfillment.
