Don't have Kids in NY that drive...

Just added my 17 year old Son to my car insurance policy. For being honest, I will now receive an annual bill just south of $20,000….

Maybe another reason to get out of NY….

Geez!

A yearly bus pass and a Uber gift card … less liability and probably a huge savings …

… and we thought the grandkids living in Las Vegas had it bad at $500 a month …

My new Mayor just said this was going to be free!

Many states have high-cost Teen driving insurance. Texas, Colorado, Arizona are some we’ve actually paid the rates in-but I have to say, nuthin’ like the rates you mentioned…or they would have been walkin’ or having mommy drive ‘em.

Not sure how it works in other states but boys cost twice as much as girls in NY to insure.

There are also 5 cars on this policy now for context. One of them is being moved to classic car insurance ASAP, which will save $1700 a year.

Already got them a good student discount, which chopped off another $800 a year, and the 3 of us that are 18 or older on this policy will be taking defensive driving, which will chop off another $1500ish….

Now we’re getting back into reality…. Worth the effort bc this is nuts….

I added my daughter to my insurance when she started driving in NY and nowhere near that amount-who is your insurance company?

USAA. It’s also 5 cars. 2 of them are “Sports” cars. Neither of them can even be driven by my kids because they are manual transmissions.

My Subaru STI is $7,000 a year now to insure because of them and they can’t drive it. Moving the other car they can’t drive to Grundy Classic insurance (88 Mustang GT). Before my kids had their licenses, that car was $1800 a year.

Then, I need to see if separating my soon to be 21 year old daughter to her own policy makes a difference.

USAA claims this policy should be $48,000 a year before discounts. LOL

Discounts bring it down to $19K. I can get it down to $14K with these other things I’m doing. Then seeing what splitting my daughter off gets us and my son off of her car.

Car insurance appears to be a game and I plan to win it.

I honestly don’t know if it’s a USAA thing or a NY thing but they will not allow certain people in the household to be isolated or be a partial driver on a particular car.

I’ve been with USAA (Thanks to my Dad’s service) for 28 years and they have been fabulous. When my daughter was barely 19 she got into an accident which wasn’t her fault and they sided with us and fought all the way through arbitration for us and handed over our deductible instantly.

Damage on her car was $5K. The other car was a brand new all-aluminum body A-8. It had $39K in damage. Other driver lied that my daughter hit him. Because nobody was hurt, there was no police report (that’s how things work in NYC), so it was up to interpretation who’s fault it was and USAA had our back all the way. I also went through exhaustive measures to have more than 1 body shop look at the car and present evidence that she was hit, not her doing the hitting…

Not leaving USAA….

Not car insurance related, but we just received our health insurance options for 2026. It’s going up 23% for us, with arguably less options and definitely more out of pocket costs if/when we get sick. It’s just my wife and I, both in our 40s, with no health issues–$1400/mo just to have insurance.

Insane.

Half of my wife’s take home pay goes to our health insurance so I hear you….

Wow! Depends on where in NY you are as well. Just a few cities over can make a difference too!

For sure. My MIL has property in Ulster County (Upstate NY) where she spends 6+ months a year at. Her car insurance is nothing….

My wife and BIL are on the deed to that house for the future so technically we could use that as an address for insurance but we are honest and sometimes honesty is expensive.

Also don’t want to deal with that ■■■■ if something happens…

It’s crazy how different it is all over a state-we are up by Albany and I thought mine was bad…lol

Just wanted to wave to a fellow upstater. I’m from Burnt Hills.

Live in Texas now, but grew up there until I was in my 30s.

In our lean self employment years I seriously considered working at the local schools as an “aide” (aka walk around with 1 or 2 kids who need help being redirected back to their work, or who may need to step out of the classroom for a little walk in the middle of a lesson). Way below my skill/education level – but it would give us health insurance for a reasonable amount. We’ve had to buy our insurance on the open marked before the ACA was even a thought. First year was $600/month for a family. Ahhh…wouldn’t that be great now. We got this through a professional org we belonged to. Those plans don’t exist any more. ACA didn’t help us.

Wow, I am really impressed.

In Spain I pay $450 per year (I am 37 yo). When I was 18, I paid around $550 per year and I had everything included on the insurance.

I don’t understand why is that expensive there.

( Inspired by another thread )

If you are paying the bills, you get to order the plates.

…or…

I suspect that you should reserve the second one until after his first accident.

Y’alls and your horror stories about teens and driving… makes me glad I didn’t have kids. Although, I do wish I had some for the tax breaks and free labor around the house.

Can I rent someone’s kids for a couple weeks?

After you feed them for awhile, you will know that they are not really free labor …

Renting them just means you pay twice because they still will need to be fed …

Not sure if this discount still exists, but insurance companies used to give a break on their prices if a student attended a college more than 100 miles from home.
