Editing a Product Details and Going in Circles

I can’t seem to get Amazon to understand that I’m going in circles trying to update/edit a product listing. They keep defining the error codes and I’m like I am FULLY AWARE of that tha error code means, but I can’t FIX it.

So I did this:

The primary image changed – per my other vent – and now I’m seeing the vicious circle on my end. SKIP trying to even upload the image because all this stuff prevents me to save

The one thing I do see is that Placemat and Place-mat are not the same thing (spelling).

Agree – but the boxes are pre-populated. So the little place-mat on top of that little box and what’s in the box match. And then in the sentence it says PLACEMAT doesn’t match PLACEMAT.

It’s a field or screen that I didn’t even touch. It’s what is pulled up when I edit a single item.

Does that make sense?

Yes, you are listing under an already created ASIN. Everything has to match that ASIN (the pre-populated) information.

But it’s pre-populated and I’m not trying to change it?

For the tabs that you have to fill in, try putting N/A. I have done that, and it seems to work (until it doesn’t…lol).

as soon as I choose Not Applicable, the other error pops up.

It’s like playing whack a mole.

I think I got it to update using a feed because the last attempt only gave me a photo error. So this has to sit I think until tomorrow.

If it is just the image that needs to be updated, have you tried using the image manager?

Image manager

Thank you. Let’s see if that works. Never used that before.

But that means I don’t have to open the listing and play whack-a-error to get pictures to save.

Maybe. The workflow Marbles sent you does work but the update might get cancelled out by the errors that are on the backend already. Unsure how Amazon’s systems work in this regard.

I know you will report back good or bad as this might be a very helpful experiment for the community members here.

Good Luck!

Error 8541 is a nightmare.
Try to use flat files (excel) to update listings instead of editing the product on SC.
It is easier to deal with errors.

If this does not work, the last resort is to create a whole new SKU with new EAN (GTIN). Doing FBM and being brand owner, this should not be a problem…

Image manager works well. It has solved a lot of problems to us.

I have tried flat files and for the most part, they don’t work.

SO…images. I fixed all the images in the last few days and am down to two ASINs with issues.

The first one got fixed thanks to the suggestion of using the image manager. (didn’t know that existed, so thank you very much). I actually sold that item last night.

The second item which is a computer with cord picture, I had opened a case with brand registry thinking maybe they would be the better help since it’s not even a picture of the product. Their answer was to do a test buy… So I just finished appealing that saying I can’t do a test buy if I’m the only seller? I did the image management option too and since the photo is still wrong, that didn’t work there.

My thought about the 8541 errors is thinking – I have to tackle those one by one and do a feed file upload to where THAT is the only error. They seem to insist on feed file uploads vs. screenshots from individual item edits. They definitely don’t understand the whack-an-error situation that was happening yesterday where step by step I showed those screenshots and I bet they didn’t look at one.

I also bet that the reps are graded based on how many cases they can answer in an hour vs. giving QUALITY or truly helpful answers. Because of the pre-prepared templates that we get as answers.

You are right, they won’t look at the screenshots.
I agree. You have to identify THE error and try to solve it yourself without seller support because we all know they are useless.

I guess you already tried to delete (wait 48h or more) and relist, right?

To create a new SKU is not an option for you?

Try this for the 8541 …

  • Download the latest category specific template excel file for the item.
  • Complete the required fields for the item plus the fields that are giving 8541 error and image file only.
  • Set the template file to be a Partial Update.
  • Upload the excel file to Amazon and wait 24 hours.
  • Check for errors … if still giving the 8541 error … upload the excel file again to Amazon.
  • Wait another 24 hours and recheck.
  • Repeat until Amazon recognizes and resets (it took us about 4 or 5 times to correct the 8541 error).

This is the method we used to clear an item_type 8541 error.

not sure if this will help, but I have noticed that when you select ‘I will ship this item myself’, the safety/compliance tab morphs into one that doesn’t care about most certifications (i.e., button-cell safety).

I am down to one. That one has the totally wrong picture and I just appealed the need to do a test buy when I’m the only seller.

But yes, that has to also be a solution on the table. Delete SKU, and start over with a new UPC Code etc.

will try

I believe you are surprised of these issues because you have not been doing updates for a very long time.

Within the last few years, Amazon has LOCKED many fields.

Let say that when you entered the product you entered 1 as a quantity, but now realize that yes you are selling one item put it has 25 dollies, and put 25 to correct that field. So sorry - Can not do. Maybe if you contact AZ catalog team, but that is like pulling teeth, so usually not worth it.

The place-mat vs Placemat is so common. I have tried to fix a spelling mistake - can not do. You must enter what it says - in this case Placemat (as that was the original entry.

Same with color. I have entered Blue Royal, and Royal Blue. Updated all items to display the same (via flat file) - all ok. But now when I go to a product, it will force me back.

Heaven forbid you entered the wrong color. No way out of that, but a new ASIN or a catalog team nightmare to fix.

Maybe months ago you updated by flat file, and all is good.

Until you come to the individual product page you are update. THERE IT is not good, and now since you are trying to update a picture, that is fine, but all errors will show and require you to restore to what was originally entered.

When you brought up color I remember one item being “red” in their system which was probably my mistake 50 years ago, and I can’t correct it to ivory.

My complaint is that when I go to a product to update a field, whack a error starts happening. I wasn’t even ON that tab. So yes, I think to update some of the fields, the flat file method worked. Then it was the image manager under the catalog option in seller central that got the main image updated because that method didn’t require me to open the whole item with the edit button.

NOW, I’ve opened it with the edit button, updated one thing, and didn’t get an error even though place-mat under item type key word is still locked with place-mat.

From what I can gather – the computer said “Your main image isn’t zoomable” so it reverted to images and information from 2015. So what happened in 2015? I jioned Amazon in about 2008 – or before 2015 for sure. Green for sure. I had listings. When I asked “Hey, how do I do free shipping?” I got told that I have to migrate to the new platform and basically start all over by hopping on to my own listings to preserve the reviews. So I did that. Then 2 months later (after I resisted for about 12 months) they announced that they could migrate all the items when a seller moves over to the new software. (YES, I was angry because I did a lot of work to save my reviews). So now when this item reverted to the old information that they still have, all the errors came with it. Back then, YES it was PLACEMATS. Today it’s Place-mat. But I didn’t even touch that tab and there was no way to even changed the field (locked) to agree with the computer

Exactly. We have to do the calculus on if updates/edits are worth the exponentially longer and draining time to fix the things that didn’t need fixing before.
