We’re good. He’s on transdermal Prozac now. It’s a gel that goes in his ear.

In the meantime, Eddie got neutered and had a skin growth removed from his neck (was benign).

The boys spent 3 weeks apart but are back together now and everything seems to be back to normal. The plan with Ollie is to keep him on his Prozac for 3 months and then start weaning him off to see if he really needs it.

The thinking is that Eddie’s “smell” will change now that he’s fixed, and will not be a perceived threat to Ollie. See Ollie sees Eddie as a friend but he had that strong smell I guess as he matured. We can’t smell it but it’s there apparently. So he’s confused why he smells this threat, coming from his friend and maybe doesn’t think that’s the origin…. He didn’t smell like this when they first got together….

It takes 4-6 weeks, post-fixing, for it to completely go away.

Just another adventure for us to navigate but the plan so far is working. Ollie has not been aggressive towards me in weeks…. I have some very cute pictures to share when I have some time.

OK, here we go……

Pic 1 Below is Eddie, unconscious before his surgeries - Vet tech playing games with him. Hard to see but those are his paws over his eyes. haha. My vet is my sister in law’s sister.

Pic 2 - Poor baby when he got home from surgery. If it was just a neuter, he would have only been in a cone for a week tops. He had stitches in his neck from a growth removal so he had to be that thing for 2 weeks! He was isolated to my MIL’s house (upstairs) for a week before surgery and 2 weeks after. We cheated a little and had the stitches out after 12 days because that monster storm was knocking at our door for when they were supposed to come out. He hates things on him so we only took it off 3X for a quick switch out to a new clean cone so we could clean the other. Because of that, he healed quite well and quickly.

.Pic 3 - Eddie back in our house and wearing an ascot to protect his neck, which was shaved and operated on. Within mins of him being back with Ollie, their play fighting resulted in a scratch near his surgical area so we freaked out and came up with a solution for when they are together. Guess he decided this was better than a cone and for some reason he didn’t mind it at all! Guess we can get a collar on this cat now if we wanted, which was not an option in the past. He would freak out and run up the walls to get it off if he could….. We broke him like a horse I guess. Haha

Pic 4 - A better picture of the ascot. Lol. So freaking cute…. Plus we can see him in the dark better.

Pic 5 - The boys back together wondering together who’s coming up the stairs…..

Pic 6 - My best bud Ollie sleeping on my lap. We are getting there… The thought that we considered putting him down because of his violent outbursts towards me makes me extra thankful that this is working out. He’s not even 3…. We have a long time left together.

The boys spend about 12 hours together a day. Eddie is still spending his nights upstairs with my MIL. My MIL had a surgery of her own last week and is recovering and enjoys Eddie’s company in the mornings.

Once she fully recovers, the plan is to let them have the 3 floors 24/7. I had shared a couple pics of them sleeping together on a chair months ago. That stopped happening shortly after it started. They were sleeping together under a covered chair yesterday which is a good sign. I suspect they will fully bond in the near future and everything will be as it should be.

It’s all about the smell of things with Ollie. He’s a little nutty and very territorial. We don’t know why since we found him when he was 5 weeks old and completely blind. But any other male cat smell (especially from outside), drives him nuts.

Hoping to be able to get him off the transdermal Prozac in the coming months. Don’t really want a chemically altered cat, and it’s expensive, and he’s not happy when I put it in his ear every night.

Here’s an update… Something freaked Ollie out and he was hissing at me again last night. FML!

Situation was quickly diffused. No actual attack.

UGH…..

May have heard something in the walls.

I know our house hound is useless against said intruders yet will de-as$ the area with the quickness if a fork is dropped.

Rescues are strange creatures sometimes (I know you’ve had Ollie since almost zero). None of them come with instructions.

It was a combination of things:

  1. He smelled something on my MIL’s kitchen floor and was rolling around. That’s normally step 1 before he flips. Not sure what it was.
  2. Then, I got the hiccups. I have a loud hiccup.
  3. Then, my MIL thought she smelled something burning. Because the cat door is always propped open, because Eddie got stuck in it once, things that happen downstairs go upstairs. I got a little freaked out because I am using a couple space heaters and an old steam humidifier in my basement to keep things somewhat workable because that’s where I work.

So I got up quickly, hiccuped loudly and headed downstairs and Ollie was coming up. I probably scared him.

But…. And this is funny…. I jokingly said, maybe Ollie will attack me and scare the hiccups away when they first started - before the something is on fire (which wasn’t true btw).

Steve’s not going to invite Ollie to attack anymore verbally. Haha

The funny thing is, him hissing and briefly chasing me did make them go away. So there’s that.
