🆕️ MakerPlace: Sales and promotions

Can you start a private thread with the Michaels product number for Alicrap?? I don’t have time to research myself, but if you post numbers, I’ll report them, as I’m sure others here will do as well. Maybe if enough of us speak loudly …

I found that email, and here is the whole section about the Sept. Sale:

So, do I understand this thing correct:

  1. Right now MP is doing a test run of 5% off during 8/8 - 8/25, which was auto added to our listings, and MP is going to fund the discount.

  2. During 9/9 - 9/16, MP is going to do a 25% off. The 25% off notice is going to auto added to our listings (like the 5% right now) and we don’t have to do anything for that to happen, right?

  3. “Schedule your september sale” means for us to add addional discount on top of that 25% off they are doing? So, if I add my own 25% off, the listing will have a 50% off? MP really want us to give our works away, don’t they.

Also, MP, not the seller, is funding the 25% discount. That’s a big discount, and MP is going to pay seller money they are not going to get from buyer, so that means they are not just getting smaller profit, but they are going to take money “out of their pocket”, and will be in the negative fo each sale. Make you wonder why they want to do this, or am I just not quite understand this thing correct?

In sales, we use to call this a Lost Leader. The idea behind something like this is to generate excitement around a product, store or, in this case, an online marketplace. The gamble is that the cost of this promotion creates a word of mouth excitement which then in turns increases sales/volume in the future. The timing of this is right after a holiday and yet before Q4 sales. Remember … crafts for holidays really starts before one would buy gifts for holidays (especially if the crafts are to become the gifts). This 25% off is advertising dollars being gifted to you.

Yes. The invoice receipt has the total buyer is paying but in payments, the seller is getting the full amount.

Correct

You do not have to add any additional discount but if you do add 25%+, you will supposedly get featured over those with no additional discount.

Hmmm, they might be seeing if they can work out some negotiated rates for MP Sellers with preferred vendors…or, ok yes, maybe just looking at marketing :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Close, but not quite the way MP is calculating the sales. First, they take the seller’s sale percent off. Then they take the MP 25% off of that sale price (not the original price). So for instance, on a $60 item, if the seller gives 25% off, it will take $15 off the original price taking it down to $45. MakerPlace will then kick in 25% off of the $45 price, taking $11.25 off the price, for a final price (not counting taxes) of $33.75.

So if you tell your buyers they are getting 50% off, they might confused why their price is $33.75 instead of $30. Obviously this matters more the higher the original price is.

Thanks for that detailed explaination. That make certainly saves some money for Michaels.

I hope some of you are getting sales from this semi-annual 25% off sale. Personally, I’m pretty disappointed with the whole thing already.

From the info in their email: “Seller offer 20% off or more will be prioritized for placement in on-site experiences”. So I set up a promotion for 20% off on a dozen listings, hoping there will be some kind of exposure during the sales for them.

Well, as far as I can tell, “prioritized for placement in on-site experiences” is still very limited to a few sellers in each categories, and otherwise it’s pretty much the same search results. Some of the items on the main sales page doesn’t have additional discount.

But on top of that, when I doing keyword search or search by the categories, my items with the discount doesn’t even showing as they have a discount, here is an example of what I’m talking about:

My crane earrings does show a 20% discount on the product page, but it doesn’t show it on the search result. So anybody who is doing any kind of search wouldn’t know there is an additional 20% off for that item. It’s the same thing for all my listings that I set up a 20% off.

Don’t know why my promotion is not showing, but other sellers do. There must be some kind of glitch. So feed up with them. Don’t know why I even bother to have the promotion.

on MakerPlace FB page, multiple sellers complained that the 25% funded by Michaels doesn’t show up until you’re on the item listing page.

Just like the ultra-lame July sale, on the sale landing page, half the featured items on the carousels have no seller-added discount despite promises about “items with 20% or more” blahblahblah.

Michael’s answered my post yesterday on FB that there is no longer a 5000 item limitation on promotions and is now unlimited so I canceled the two promotions I had going that were NOT working anyway. We’ll see in an hour from now if that makes any difference and I will report back.

I have the same, but opposite, problem. When I saw that MP was not offering a true 25% off when seller offered a sale, I canceled my promotion. But 30 hours later, my items are still showing a sale price in search results or category browse pages (but not on the product page or my storefront).

None for me yesterday or today so far.

Set this promotion to start at 8am PST. Nothing showing up on their site so F this promotion as it’s been a waste of time. No sales today or yesterday which in itself is not normal for me.

Everything is so massed up.

Since 20% additional sale wasn’t really getting any special treatment, I was seriously thinking just cancel my promotion. But since serach result of my items don’t even show the discount, I figured nobody is going to see them anyway, so I’m just going to leave the promotion as it is, so I can see whether their tech team is going to fix my promotion not displaying on research result problem. So far they haven’t, and probably wouldn’t have done any good even if they do. :unamused:

So to recap today. Had 4 sales last night. All 4 listings did not show my discount on the thumbnail page. Only one listing showed my discount on the detail page but all 4 applied the correct discount at checkout so three buyers got a pleasant surprise at checkout.

According to the email reply I got from seller surport, this was a known issue and they are working on fixing it. Is it fixed yet? I didn’t have this issue, my promotion discount were showing on the proudct pages. My problem was this:

and to my surprise this morning, they did fix the problem. Now my discount are showing on thunbnail pages of keyword search or category browsing.

A little improvement, but I’m still not holding my breath for orders, so far nothing yet, and the stats showing only a slight increase of “Views”, likely from my own click on the listing checking things.

So, “Seller offer 20% off or more will be prioritized for placement in on-site experiences” statement is such a piece of fiction (and some other stronger words I can think of). Definetely won’t be drinking that cool-aid again.

Not for me.

“The sale that never was” :sob:

My listings are slowly starting to show my discount in red. Only a handful so far, so it seems it is a slow updating progress. Seems like the solution next time is to start your sale a week before Michael’s official start.

That described my experience with this Semi-annual sale. Not one sale, and hardly any “Views” showing on Stats.

The only thing happened was an inquiry of whether I’d offer wholesale for one of my folded book, they have a gallery/boutique. I answered no, but since that item was one of the listing that had my 20% off discount and Michaels’ 25% off on top of it, that’s a total of 40% off the listing price, so I suggest they make the purchase during the Sale (I had 3 listed). Of course, that didn’t happen.

Hope others had better experience than I.

ETA: Is it even possible to offer wholesale on MP for a perticular buyer?

I had 2 sales. Which is just average for me I guess? I should maybe write it down but I feel like I average about 2 to 3 sales a month. Overall I’m at 39 sales since Makerplace opened. I don’t even know if that’s brag worthy? Maybe it is for selling something that isn’t so mainstream like jewelry or clothing??

I totally forgot to even check my stats. I should have checked them the day it started and the last day. I fell out of habit of checking stats for so long because it was broken.

Well, if you’re on Faire, then MP could be nice for getting wholesale leads and then directing inquiries to there.
