Switcheroo - buyer returned 8 yr old version of my product, how to refund nothing?!

This buyer claimed defective for a free return too. She used the item for 8 years, ordered a new one and returned the old one. Slight changes in color and design were an obvious tell to me that the returned item was at least 8 yrs. old.
She doesn’t deserve a dime for a refund, and owes me the return label cost too. It did not auto-refund so no Safe T Claim, it’s up to me; what is the least I have to refund her? I really shouldn’t have to give her anything. I wish the offer hadn’t been Free Shipping so I could recoup that too!

In the return screen, charge restocking fee, choose “item materially different,” then in the charge restocking fee area you can choose 100%. You will have to include photos, I suggest including one of the returned unit side by side with a new unit making it clear that the returned item is not the sent item, but it depends on how different they look.

Thank you. I didn’t think we could go to 100%, that is good news. The color is obviously different shades of blue and there are other physical differences I can point out, white hooks that are now silver and the new one has more holes the hooks can go in so it is easy to see it’s not the same . I already took the photo of the old returned item and the current model she was sent side by side.

I suspect she might already be on Amazon’s radar since they did not auto-refund her.

It is not giving me the option to recoup the return label charge. The last one I had did allow that, it only has additional refunds option:

That option depends on what return reason the buyer used. You might be SOL on that one. Maybe a SAFE-T claim.

Can’t do a Safe-T Claim because Amazon didn’t auto-refund. I did not finish the restocking fee screen yet because I will need to take more photos in the daylight, they want ‘several angles’ of the returned item. Maybe once I finish that the label refund section will change?

unfortunately you are SOL on the return label.

Amazon will not charge a customer beyond the refund (yet they do it for themselves).

You are just going to have to make it a write off

That is wrong of Amazon - make us pay the shipping for buyers trying to scam us.

Of course they do. More screw the sellers.

I just submitted the refund, at least that buyer won’t get their money back. Is it still recommended to also report the buyer or does the switcheroo refund claim suffice to get them on Amazon’s bad buyer radar?

Buyer claimed defective, since they did not return the one they received that claim is moot.
But I was not able to recoup the bogus return label charge which should automatically be charged to the buyer when they are pulling a scam. I guess that would be an ‘unauthorized charge’ on their credit card. Some legalese in the terms might be able to fix that! ‘Buyer authorizes additional charges for all costs incurred for fraudulent returns’ … but the banks might not like that.

Did that really work? To go and manually put in 100% for a restocking fee?

If the item is not RFS and manual you just have to do the restocking fee.
You MUST select “item is materially different” Take photos from every angle and explain that this is a completely different item from the one shipped to them. Then select 100% restocking fee (or maybe you have to select other and type in 100%)

Yep but think of it this way. If it were your own website and you provided the label, there is no legal way to charge them (yet somehow Amazon gets away with it)

Yes, it did work. Showed buyer refund $0.00

100% is an available option to select, and some other preset % amounts; and also “other” to assign a different percentage if you want.

To be fair, that ‘legalese’ already exists in the CHC (“Customer-facing Help Content”) page - of which provisions all members of Amazon’s Buyer Community have to @ least digitally sign-off upon in order to allow Amazon’s automated mechanisms to pass through to the Buyer Account creation workflow - as is embodied by the ‘Your Account’ section of the “Conditions of use” page @ https: //www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=GLSBYFE9MGKKQXXM.

We ourselves HAVE leveraged (link, SAS) that particular proviso to our benefit more than a mere-few times over the last couple of decades - but it must be admitted that slogging through the sludge that Amazon spouts & spews to protect its bottom line HAS become more tedious (and tormentuous) in recent years.

There is no mechanism for me to leverage to charge the buyer for the return label.
