Updates to improve your product titles begin on July 27

I tried one tonight, as a test case. Old, slow seller so not a great loss if it does not go well. The item is grey with raised white letters, intentionally distressed to look old.

The AI title said ‘distressed white’ with white letters, so it obviously did not look at the image, it missed the grey area that is much larger than the white letters.

I fixed that and made a few other adjustments and saved the edit. I did not click on Accept to agree to the AI version, because it was wrong.

I did notice this at the bottom of the page:

By using the proposed content, you agree that you have reviewed the content and that it is accurate, complete, and compliant with all applicable laws and Amazon policies including but not limited to our .(? not sure what got cut off here.)

So it looks like liability for policy compliance is ultimately on us, we are to check the AI version and correct it if necessary.

Please tell me when Amazon has ever taken responsibility for anything.

That’s what is at the end …

We also tried a slow seller today. We review the “AI enhancements” and decided to see what would happen if we used them but entered them manually and changed two items a tiny bit. The item saved and said that “if” it was accepted that it would appear within 24 hours. After about 30 minutes, we reviewed the back end and could see that what we had put in was added as the inputs and was showing above the input as what was on the product detail page. However, the product detail page has yet to be changed.

When we had the edit page open the second time, we wondered what would happen if we checked the “AI enhancements” again. What it returned was a shorter version of the new updated version on the title and item highlight fields (not acceptable) and redid one of the bullet points which had been changed to what the first “AI enhancements” had for it. Interestingly, the second one was better. However … when we tried to update that bullet to this second enhancement, the system would not update the item. Our guess is that you can only update once within a 24 hour period.

We can tell you that it did accept our brand name in the title (and we kept it to 75 characters) when we were able to simply add it to what the original “AI enhancements” had given as the title. The entries show both in the field and above the field as if it is on the product detail page. It appears that it doesn’t like ( or ) in the title or item highlights and any use of [ or ] in the bullets.

It likes to start of the bullets with something like …
Customization Capacity:
Multiple Size Options Available:
Durable Materials and Construction:
and then follow basically with what you have (had) in the bullet (at least for us it was like that).
The “AI enhancements” also wanted us to add two more bullets with information that it took from the description (which put us up to 7 bullets).

We plan on updating more items once we see how this one goes. Another thing we are going to do is to do the second round of “AI enhancements” and mark them as unacceptable (thumbs down) to see if this will finalize the changes and stop the “AI enhancements” from doing any changes that we don’t want. Probably means we are going to have to look at our items weekly for a while which isn’t a big deal for us but could be very troublesome for anyone with a large item count.

This is sure to be a FU process. I’ve updated a dozen or so titles, some on the parent listing if there are variations, and after two days, maybe half are actually showing up correctly on the listing and manage inventory. The lag and unpredictability is totally FU.

I have to admit, this is one of those things that makes me glad I sell only books on Amazon, and don’t have to worry about garbage like this!

Our Update

  1. Amazon did accept the brand name at the beginning of the title; however, the brand name is removed on the product detail page. The brand name does show in the title on the search pages and also in the header of the browser page. We are going to set ours up with the brand name as it will work on our titles. If Amazon removes it later from search and browser tab header, oh well then.
  2. The title on the product detail page on a desktop browser shows up as Title | Item Highlights which is basically the way our title was before. It just has the “|” type separator between the two parts.
  3. Today, we updated one of the bullets on this listing. It results in the same process of being uploaded and the notice that after it is review and accepted will appear in 24 hours on the product detail page. During this process we redid the “AI enhancements” which were all not acceptable so we unselected all and closed the popout. Since this is what we saw, we think once you have done a title in 75 characters, the 125 Item Highlights, and have the “|” bar showing in the title that Amazon bot will see the title as meeting the new structure and leave it alone … or at least that is what we are hoping.
  4. The bullet update we did today went through pretty quick and is already on the product detail page (less than 20 minutes). It appears the delay and approval process is only for the Title | Item Highlights.

For us with our limited amount of items, this process will be fairly painless. We feel for those of you who have larger inventories and/or have SKUs on ASINs where you have no control of the title.

We will try to remember to circle back and update if this change helped or not with sales. With Prime Days, July 19th and July 4th all coming up, we really might not be able to tell until the end of July. Normally, we see a bump in July with back to school … so we’ll see.

I had to add 5 items today and started playing around with the title and highlights and we shall see how this plays out in 24 hours on my end. 75 Characters feels so short, I just wish they would make up their minds and the STICK to it and ENFORCE it.

We noticed on the Manage Inventory edit page that the new Item Highlights attribute is not currently marked with a * to make it a required field.

Agree. I finally got the spreadsheet to work after a few tries. I had said that my items were not pesticides. Then I got an error message I couldn’t find. FINALLY figured out that columns were hidden, unhid those and still couldn’t fill that column out correctly. So I deleted everything in the pesticide column and it worked.

THEN individually, went in a tweeked each listing. Added photos and bullet points, key search words, and shortened the title while I was there. Put those extra (deleted) words in the highlight part and we’ll see how that looks.

OH…image hosting. For some reason I got locked out of Imgur. Fine.

Found Imgbb and uploaded one image there.

Used that link for Amazon and it worked.

Used that link for Walmart and it doesn’t work. Says access is denied. HUH?

One site could use it but the other site can’t.

Grr…

I just literally use my own personal google drive for Walmart images. Works just fine.

Just need to make it so anyone can access the file.

For our products, I use the link for their images on our Shopify storefront. I export the products out of Shopify to a spreadsheet, and since it includes the URLs for all the images, I can just copy and paste them over.

I’m curious how everyone is going to re-do titles when you have specific fitment / compatibility that the customer must follow before purchasing?

For example: Laptop Power Adaptors that fit 3 different brands and models. Do you try to squeeze it in the product title or will putting that information in the item highlight be visible enough for customers?

The new item highlights field directly follows the title on desktop and is right under the title on mobile app. We have the requirement type items in the item highlights.

On the desktop, the highlights are in the title after the |.

Unfortunately, another country has been heard from on this subject:

Sigh.

When I got the 75 characters email, I went to Manage Inventory with the idea of getting a head start on this. I was hoping for a list of titles over 75 characters, but noooo, that would be too easy. Seems like I’ll have to go through each of 1600 ASINs to check. Shi–in’ lotta work.

If you down load your Category Listings Report, you could set up a title filter which would limit the titles shown to be over 75 characters.

I’m just gonna wait for them to show me what they’ve done.

When Amazon changes something for sellers, Amazon often puts a lock on that attribute which makes it hard (if not impossible) to change and/or correct. Just take a look at all of the posts about Amazon changing an item’s category to something that isn’t even close.

Not sure that we want to gamble on whether or not we could change our item’s titles after Amazon’s bot changed them … not to mention the time spent trying to get Amazon to allow the change we need.
