Someone posted on the NSFE that the USPS would be closed for National Mourning Day for President Carter; but I’ve not seen any official announcement. Has anyone heard anything definite?

The Fedz have not yet finalized the details, but if previous National Day of Mourning precedents are followed, I’d expect all Federal employees to be granted a day of leave…
Yes, Carter was part of the default list. I have removed it.
USPS employees are technically not Federal Employees.
The Federal Office of Personnel Management just completed a process to take Postal Employees and Retirees of government employees health care plans.
They have a whole set of new plans to choose from, which look mighty close to the old plans but refect the fact that they are not Federal Employees.
My hundred and two year old Mom was panicked by the notification her health care plan was going away. And my brother and I were panicked because the website with the new plans was not available until a month after the notices were sent.
Wow. God Bless!
The USPS is closed on January 9th 2025. Along with the stock market, Supreme Court, and other federal agencies.
For me, I have seen Commerce and in the last few decades eCommerce STOP when they set the national day of morning.
First thing I brought up this morning to my right hand woman, married to a longtime USPS worker. She instantly knew he would get a day off. I instantly knew we would loose a few days of business on Amazon.
This since they will warn customers “your item may not arrive in time” so be it.
Not political, however, I lived through 16% interest, rampant inflation, stickers on top of stickers at the market and stores. For the younger members, we did not have UPC codes and scanners at the time.
Then the increase from 50 cents a gallon to higher, though it did not mater you could only get gas based on your plate. Odds, on one day, evens on the other. We had a commercial plate, we got to go any day, but boy did we get crap when we did. Lines at the gas stations, people running out of fuel and pushing the car to get to the pump.
Then the price fixing (freeze) you could not raise your price. So business owners invented rebates. Especially Car companies, rebates were exempt from this rule.
We bought our first home with a adjustable mortgage at that time. Then converted to a fixed one when the next administration came in and we had lower interest rates. Still it was 11.5% interest as an adjustable.
I will not even get into the global issues, especially the hostage issues at the time.
All that said, he was a good man after he left office. I think he lived his dream and helped the world on his departure from the office as President of the United States.
Since my carrier did not come by to pick up today, I had to take packages into the PO today. I asked the clerk if she had heard anything; her response was “Usually, with things like this, they say ‘All federal offices, except the Post Office’”, so we’ll see.
My wife is a “banker” since they head hunted her out of our company. They do not get the day off.
President Bid…(current President) has issued an Executive Order closing federal agency offices and giving federal employees a holiday to honor former President Jimmy Carter.
My prior post was from life experience, what my right hand woman has said, and a USA Today article, that I am now locked out of since I viewed it to many times.
Stay tuned, this information just became available this morning.
Note: @Pepper_Thine_Angus I think BidXXXX is restricted. As was Carter.
I was in the investment business at the time. In 1981 decided to build to get out of an apartment with three kids. As I recall we were one of about 1000 houses built in our four county area the entire year. My construction loan was 17% and we were up and in from ground breaking to finished in 90 days because there was so little being built.
On completion my ‘friendly local bank’ that I had done business with for years jacked the permanent financing to 21% and gave me 30 days to sign or be foreclosed.
I found a company with a negative amortization loan linked to Treasury rates and changing annually. For two years we owed more money on the loan every day/month.
I did nothing but technical analysis when I was in sales and it did NOT take a genius to see what was going to happen to those rates once a trend line broke. It was as close to a sure thing as has ever existed
After the second year the rate dropped every year for something like 15 consecutive years! And, I have not set foot in that bank in the past 43+ years.
I used to tell my Commodities traders they needed the market to move to make money and to do that you needed to ‘live in interesting times.’
I did NOT tell them that that was (supposedly) an ancient Chinese CURSE!
“Normal” is boring (and really does not exist) – bring on the challenging stuff.
Deja vu. 25 cents a gallon when I got my first car, a used Valiant for $50, with push button drive, neutral, reverse buttons on the dash. Another driver ran a red light, smashed in my front end; the insurance company deemed it totaled and gave me $250.
Bought first home a few years later on land contract because mortgage rates were over 16%.
Sorry for veering off topic.
He was a good man.
He was a VERY good man. Just his work against guinea worm puts him on the level of people like Salk, and he did much more.
But I think that was part of his problem, as well. To be an effective politician, you need to be a bit of a cynic, and at times, more than a bit of an a-hole; and he simply did not have that in him. Great man; so-so president.
Amen, brother.
An example to all.
ETA: Still nothing posted (yet) on USPS site. This was the notice for Pres Bush: https://www.usps.com/national-day-of-mourning/welcome.htm
I don’t believe my mom received this notification?
Can you tell me how she received that?
My mom has FedBlue my dad worked at the DOD . I was not aware of any of this.
Just verified with our post office … they WILL be closed on Thursday Jan 9, 2024 for President Carter.
Good. They should be.
Now to see how much Amazon messes it up with promised shipping times…
Does the holiday rate increase end on jan 1 or jan 31?
Jan 19, 2025 … the holiday upcharge stops and USPS new rates go into effect at the same time (which appear to be an increase from the pre-holiday upcharge but a decrease from the holiday upcharge).
He was a good man, a Christian-he taught Sunday School at his church in Plains for more than 50 years but made his legacy after he left the Oval Office. Never doubted his integrity for a minute, unlike latter politicians.
Since Carter graduated from Annapolis, will the planners do some naval touches? I’m old enough to recollect JFK’s funeral and how they played the Naval Hymn(AKA Eternal Father, Strong to Save) which my musical mom sang as his coffin went up/down the stairs of the Capital. Impressed me deeply, since I can recall it 61 years later. .
Some of the toughest times my husband and I faced as a couple were during Carter’s presidency. Bad times, inflationary times and then the “signature event,” the Iranian Hostage Crisis…
During his term, we purchased our first home, right under 80K, brand new 3 BR/2 BA, mortgaged on a VA loan at 9%, I think that was the legal limit at the time. Today the VA rate is 6.8% but the average house cost 425K or more,. Though luckily both employed, we had a difficult time making those payments, though now they seem picayune.
May he and Rosalynn both rest in peace…
If I recall, back on December 5, 2018 the post office closed as a day of mourning when the elder President Bush passed away.
