So over the summer during one of Amazon’s blow out days I got myself a tent (10x20ish) for behind my barn (mancave/workshop) so the tractor and other yard tools would be somewhat protected from the elements. It was cheap ($120 delivered) and said to myself, “meh, I’ll get a year out of it then build a proper lean to.” Said tent also helped shield the minisplits from direct sun helping cool the barn.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago, first snow. Didn’t think anything of it, until I went to fire up the snowblower and forgot all the gas is BEHIND the barn under the tent, oh well, wet feet it is. Tent was fine, didn’t think anything of it.

Nest day, go to put gas can back, Tent had gone smush. My bad, it had a typical hip roof, cheap, thin steel posts, one little touch of a breeze and it collapsed with that weight. It had survived many wind storms as I had anchored it well and ratchet strapped it at every corner, but alas, did not last a year.

Fast forward to 2 weeks ago, saw a proper “ShelterLogic” unit the same size a few hours away on marketplace and said, yeah that’ll do. Grabbed it. Mind you everything is still inder collapsed tent (tractor hood smashed).

And then comes yesterday. Decent weather, impending wind storm, lets do this. “3+HR build” was 3 hrs. Got the end walls on, and went to put the roof on and the wind showed up, LOL. Got it done, anchored it down and it survived the night.

I have to figure out a better plain for the minisplits, not exactly happy with how this turned out.

TLDR, ShelterLogic makes some decent stuff!

A few days ago I saw a clip from a German news broadcast (DW; I think their equivalent of PBS or BBC). The reporter was talking about the huge storm that was hitting.
Schools closed. Trains shut down. Lots of people stuck because of the snow.

And up north in places like Hamburg it was REALLY bad, with some places reporting up to 20cm of snow!

smh

And you wonder how they ever fought any wars…

Why did I get SNOW this weekend as a Georgian? (Yes, I know WHY, but still.)

Because Florida pushed it north :).

Was recently in Tennessee and the locals are like, this is too cold. My heat pump isn’t working any more!

Florida can keep the gulf moisture! People already don’t know how to drive when it RAINS here, forget frozen precipitation of any type.

That said, supposedly we’re getting ARCTIC ice instead this upcoming weekend, so that’s what I get for being grumpy.

Our high today is 22F, My heat pumps in my barn aren’t happy, they are off and I have my trusty backup oil filled radiators on

They were tougher folks-that’s not just age-bias of the elderly.

No cradle-to- grave emoluments. The “Greatest Generation” was brought up during the Depression; food/shelter wasn’t necessarily a given; families sent their teenagers out to work, put supper on the table. University or even high-school education was beyond the means of many.

They were tough at ages 17, 18. 19-they weren’t finding themselves at that age; taking a gap year or using the excuse their frontal cortex hadn’t yet met in the middle. Many of the soldiers in the Normandy cemeteries are less than 20 years old- the young and fit always fight wars but still makes me weep. Not on the subject-apologies!

Got to get our shovels out for this up coming weekend …

Probably will have to also get out the bike flag. Depending on the amount of snow we get, I might need to strap it to the wife if she goes outside so I can kept track of her … she’s only 4 foot 8 1/2 inches on a good day.

Most of the east coast might need bike flags this weekend!

As a PSA, Please remember to help out neighbors if you can and shovel out your fire hydrants! The time saved by the FD not digging out a hydrant can save a life!

Forecast accumulation has steadily increased each day. At least it’s supposed to be a fluffy snow.

Bottomed out at -9.2F. Weather station is in the garden, tends to be spot on. The house is angry making some interesting bangs and groans, but has held.

The two minisplits in the barn had no chance so I shut them off a few days ago and have oil filled electric radiators out there set to 50. Then managed 34.

Actually, I would prefer the snow to this forecast. We have a heat wave today. Monday morning was 13 BELOW when I got in the car…

Last I heard from my weather friends, the models have shifted north, so Virginia and north are now the heavy targets

@papy missed the EXCITING part of the forecast (for my area). If you thought dropping iguanas was exciting, how about ducking shrapnel from exploding trees…

"The extreme cold temperature causes them to freeze, expand, and then crack the bark of the tree.

The result creates a loud, “gunshot-like” noise, say forecasters.

It can also sometimes cause heavy branches and limbs to fall, damaging structures and power lines."
