There were many times I had to actually look up a word because I had never heard it before, which I enjoyed, but I often wondered if I was having a hard time comprehending what a seller from another country must be thinking
And many from this country as well. I remember one poor woman I felt really bad for until @bookwormapril stepped in to translate. The woman was getting an error message and the solution was pretty simple - either add an apostrophe or remove one, I donāt remember which - but dogtamer rambled on in his typical convoluted way, and you know the poor lady had zero chance of getting what she needed out of what he said, but then April chimed in and said - he means do this andā¦ problem solved.
I never understood why he always insisted on speaking that way to everyone - heās not a dumb guy and he must have realized that this woman wouldnāt grasp it, and when your business is suffering and youāre stressed from it, you donāt want someone to come in and say - letās play a game, Iāll give you the answer in code and if youāre smart enough to figure it out, you can get your problem solved, otherwise youāll stay screwed. It just seems so mean.
Which is not to say he couldnāt have continued to share his commentary in the way so many of you (not me) seemed to enjoy, but why force it on someone who really needs help?
Get over it, so he has a large vocabulary. Do the work if you want the help.
That seems fairly rude, Iām not sure if you meant it that way?
Itās a little like telling someone who got a product that requires assembly, where the instructions came in a foreign languageā¦ just learn that language and problem solved! It seems pretty unrealistic.
Anyway, I donāt want to turn this thread into a debate over dogtamer. Some like his style, some donāt, and some have a combination of feelings. Everyoneās entitled to their own opinion.
I believe that education is essential for personal growth and development. If someone is lacking in knowledge or understanding on a particular subject, I would encourage them to educate themselves by researching reputable sources, engaging with experts in the field, and exploring different perspectives.
It is important to recognize that we all have knowledge gaps and areas where we can improve. We should foster an environment of curiosity and learning. Education is a lifelong journey, and there is always more to discover and understand.
I get that, though I do @dogtamer for he/she taught me I must continue to learn how to learn.
And as you know, I love you in a nonsexual way, sending you the soap on a rope when you were in Amazon forum OSFE jail.
After so many years traveling around the sun, I do know, everyone is different, they all fit in the cog that is the America. And those of us in Amazon purgatory.
People tend to communicate the way they do out of habit, even if they are capable of doing otherwise. When I need to change my speaking or writing style to fit a specific situation to which they are not suited, which happens, it takes a conscious effort. Itās one of the reasons I cannot for the life of me write decent dialogue. All my characters sound the same, and they all sound just like me.
I suspect the same is true of Dogtamer. I donāt think he was writing with any deliberate intent to confuse or impress or institute a higher bar for receiving his help. Just my impression.
Where art thou, Muse, that once inspired the pen
To craft immortal words of love and woe?
Where art thou, Skill, that taught the minds of men
To shape their thoughts in verse and make them flow?
Alas, thou art forsaken and forgot,
By this ungrateful age that scorns thy worth.
Thy noble art is now a barren plot,
Where weeds of slang and jargon choke the earth.
No more the laurel crown adorns thy head,
No more the praise of critics fills thine ear.
Thy glory fades, thy fame is almost dead,
Thy works are doomed to dust and disappear.
O Muse, O Skill, revive thy dying flame,
And save thy sacred art from endless shame.
Dogās prose never bothered me. I actually rather enjoyed it. But then again, I worked on a university campus for many years where I frequently heard and read that sort of language.
Iām still on a listserv from my old department. Compared to some of the seminar announcements that I receive from them, Dogās prose is easy to understand.
And the benefit of those of us who appreciate language, and thought, as an alternative to the banal and insipid text posted by some sellers. I often wonder whether some Amazon sellers have ever made a purchase in store. I know some are using translate software and are barely literate in their native language.
Even when I do not care about a topic Dogtamer is expounding, I find it interesting.
Letās call a spade a spade. There are times when Iāve skimmed @lake@dogtamer@papy@rms, pick any poster - itās nothing personal. Sometimes you just run out of attention. Based on the likes Iāve gotten on my posts vs others I can tell I get less attention - no big deal to me. With Dog, I skim when my eyes glaze. I still find him incredibly fair and a good person. And there are those of us who have interacted with him more than others and I speak for many when I say heās a good person and goes out of his way to be helpful.
And one other thing about Dog. It appears he has an archive of every post to which heās attached and his citations and memory are near or at savante level.
Reading Dogtamerās posts is for me, consistent with many years of reading certain columnists in newspapers, you do it more for how they express their opinion, as much as their opinion.
Some of those writers included Bill Buckley, William Safire and Gerard Baker today.
