šŸ“ŗ What I'm watching

Wow, I did not realize Vera had been around for 14 seasons. She only popped up on a channel that I get about 3 or 4 years ago. Have you read any of the books? I’ve had customers tell me that the books are better. I have one in the book case but haven’t gotten to it yet.

I also always thought ā€œpetā€ was a bit eww. Though she does mean well to those she uses it on.

My first exposure to ā€œpetā€ was the dad’s fiance using it for the twins in the original Parent Trap, and not kindly. I always think of that.

I bought several of the Vera books when got hooked on the TV series on BritBox, where can view the whole 14 seasons. The first, THE CROW TRAP, the character’s debut novel but not Cleeve’s debut novel, which was A BIRD in the HAND(birdwatchers solving crime) I got a quarter through. Halfway through the second, TELLING TALES. (They were the first two in the both the TV/ book series). In my opinion, they were overwritten and too dark for my taste.

To me, due to Blethyn’s performance, the TV series is the best. Cleeve’s Jimmy Perez novels are better-and we’ve watched the Shetland TV series. Glorious scenery but his low-key interview style can be wearing in the 6- episode format. We like the new format of the series w 2 female DI’s ā€œToshā€ Macintosh and Ruth Calder.

Perez is a empathetic character, while Vera, in the two books I read, isn’t.

I just finished Severance last night and definitely enjoyed it. I was left genuinely angry at the multiple cliffhangers at the end of season 1 given Apple’s proclivity to randomly cancel things, but season 2 is already released or being released soon.

I’d purchased the bluray and halfway through watching it noticed it was available to stream for free through multiple services.

We watched Darby & Joan on Acorn TV, starring Bryan Brown(Thorn Birds) and Greta Scacchi (Emma-Mrs.Weston). This is a great show for those of us who are of ā€œmatureā€ age since it’s built on the premise that that ā€œgray nomadsā€ ie: retirees can still have adventures. According to the series, sexism is rampant in Australia…

Scacchi, 64, w/ gorgeous British skin and Italian clothes-sensibility, driving a rented RV, is on the hunt for the reason her husband died in Australia when he’d told her he was in Spain. She has a car-accident very early w/ Brown( a well-preserved 77) w/ just enough wrinkles/hair-loss of to be believable,

Enjoyed all twelve episodes plus glorious/ varied scenery made us decide to vacation in Queensland!
He just happens to be a retired cop and his ex-wife and daughter are still detectives in the state police.

Texas Tech vs Houston basketball game. What a game … overtime and a 1 point game in the end. Texas Tech (the underdog) pulled it out by one for the win.

Guns Up for the Red Raiders!

[Forum Members Please don’t abuse me for encouraging gun violence! One makes an ā€œLā€ (the university is located in Lubbock, TX) or ā€œGunā€ with thumb & forefinger and wag it when the team scores. Opposed to Hook 'Em Horns (for U/T) or Gig 'Em Aggies( for Texas A&M), my maternal side’s alma mater.

Unless one is from Texas, can’t imagine what kinda complications occurred when my husband admitted (before the wedding) his cousin played football for U/T back in the 1960’s!

If you have not seen it, I would recommend Silo… Season 2 just ended and as a watcher who did not know of the books it was pretty good.

TONIGHT I’m watching the first #snl50 episode, which NBC is airing in prep for tomorrow (SUNDAY) night’s LIVE twice-as-long 50th anniversary special 8p ET

It’s funny; I’m right in that age group that should have been a long time SNL fan (very late 50s; like ā€œfifty-elevenā€), but I never got into the show at all. Although I did watch when Betty White was on; I think that was the last time.

I said the same.

I like how Vera never turns down a belt of Whiskey (while on duty) from a case interview as long as she has her DD Joe (designated driver)

Last night NBC aired the very first episode of SNL from 1975. George Carlin was host and Billy Preston and Janis Ian were musical guests. The episode was very different from the ones today. I remember watching SNL late on Saturday nights. I was still living at home and everyone else in the house was asleep at the time (no recording shows yet to be watched later). I had to keep the volume turned down and I pulled the sliding door between the kitchen and living room shut to reduce noise.

What memories from the early shows.

I watched just to see where and how the original cast would pop up. It was heart-warming to see Laraine holding up a picture of Gilda at the end. I’m not old enough to have watched the original cast when they were first run, but the classics are still my favorite seasons.

Also Eddie Murphy doing a pitch-perfect Tracy Morgan next to Tracy Morgan was good, but most of the sketches were not great.

I LOVED that! Plus Tom Hanks pulling out his Jeopardy Doug. And Bill Murray ranking update anchors…which he was one. Zach Galifianakis was hilarious (and thankfully brief), enjoyed seeing Rob Riggle and a ton of other folks in the audience, Tina and Amy killed it with the Q&A. I thought Robert de Niro was the best part of Debbie Downer but you can’t beat Rachel Dratch. The Anxiety song and video was heartwarming. The In Memoriam was unexpected and awesome and definitely cringy. Garrett Morris! I saw Lorraine with Gilda’s photo and :sob:. I was surprised to see Chevy Chase and not to see Dan Akroyd (I think Jane Curtin was in audience) but maybe I just missed him? Also surprised to see Mike Meyers but not Dana Carvey. Glad to see Aubrey Plaza, even just briefly. And Pedro Pascal, Molly Shannon, the commercials, Ana Gasteyer, Will Farrell’s Robert Goulet. I think Steve Martin might be starting to slow down (:pensive:) but Martin Short is not. I saw Aidy Bryant in the seats but missed her on stage. And honestly? I even enjoyed the not-parody commercials using The Californians and Delicious Dish and whatever heavy metal Cerave dandruff thing that was with (current castmembers) Sarah Sherman and Bowen Yang. Keenan Thompson, Colin Jost, Michael Che nailed everything, as always. The writers not getting in and Lovitz seated at the American Girl store was :woman_cook::kissing_smiling_eyes:…

Jane Curtin was there with Laraine Newman holding the photo of Gilda. I recognized her immediately. She wasn’t on camera earlier so many people missed her.

I loved seeing some of the older performers on the show. Garrett Morris introduced the film of an ā€œolderā€ John Belushi visiting the cemetery where SNL performers were buried. I had seen the film a few times previously but not for a long time. By the way, Morris is an excellent singer who trained at Julliard School of Music. Once when Walter Matthau hosted, he requested that Morris sing classical music. The man had a great voice.

I got a kick out of seeing Kate McKinnon as Ms. Rafferty in the alien abduction skit. And Meryl Streep as her mother was priceless!

I rediscovered the Hillbillies a year ago and did a slight binge. I don’t remember seeing the early episodes when I was a youngster. I did get tired of Cousin Pearl episodes. The ones in England were kind of dull too, though I still smile at the use of ā€œHavershamā€ by the Hillbillies.

More interesting to me was a book that came across my path after I was about 8 episodes in. About the actors during the show. My favorite was that Donna Douglas had a thing with Elvis when she made the movie Frankie and Johnny. And second was the fact that Raymond Bailey was bald in reality. For several shows after reading that, I tried to see a bad wig day.
