đŸ“ș What I'm watching

From the ALWAYS reliable Wikipedia (/S) 7-Eleven, Inc. is an American convenience store chain, headquartered in Irving, Texas. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Seven-Eleven Japan, which in turn is owned by the retail holdings company Seven & I Holdings.

I hadn’t even heard of that; although since it’s not available on anything I have, not a surprise. Looked it up on IMDB, and the reviews are, to say the least, mixed. Based on some of the comments, it’s not looking like something I’m going to get excited about watching. But I guess I might give it a try if it’s free at some point.

We (finally) finished watching all 9 episodes last night.

At first, the f-- bombs kinda turned us off(do the Scots only know one
maybe two cuss words?) Plus, we don’t particularly like the multi-episode crescendo to the end.(The reason Shetland, despite the glorious scenery and a Detective-Sgt named Tosh, got on our nerves-and that was only 6 episodes!!) Assumed it was J. Perez’s low-key interview style. Now we know different because say what one will about DCI Morck, he certainly isn’t low key!

But the screen-writers had us from the first time they showed the lady barrister in
won’t spoil it for anyone

We also have enjoyed ART Detectives which is more our speed( 3 episodes so far, 3 mysteries solved.). Also Chelsea Detective-hope it returns next season. Architecture to die for!! .

LOL it wasn’t the f-bombs that got me but the very frequent use of the c-word–that c-word. Loved it when she chided him for using it work!

It was very “Only Murders” to me. Which, I like, but it also makes it trickier for me as armchair detective since the viewer only gets mission-critical information in frustratingly
small
slow
doses of bombshells. I had kinda sorta figured out the who/what catalyst, and I was suspicious about someone, but I certainly had not guessed everything.

I am hoping for a second season. Too many good characters, too many interesting threads.

To all, can anyone tell me if Towards Zero is worth a month of BritBox? $9. I mean, it’s Agatha Christie, we know the story, but is this adaptation worth it?

Wimbledon’s underway! Choose from any court on ESPN+. Lots of upsets already, only the 2nd day. Well worth the 12 bucks for a month, for tennis fans anyway

Have just finished 1 and 2 and starting 3, all on Netflix:

  1. Amy Bradley Is Missing (true crime/unsolved mystery)
  2. The Four Seasons (limited series dramedy based on the 1981 movie with Alan Alda and Carol Burnett. Alan Alda is in this one, too!)
  3. The Residence (mystery/comedy/“screwball whodunit”), similar vibe to Only Murders in the Building plus Sherlock Holmes but if Agatha Christie wrote it)

For my fellow SNL fans, plenty to see in both 2 and 3 (thankfully no SNL in the true crime doc), including one of personal OG favorites Jane Curtin in 3! Also for The Office lovers, you get Michael Scott in 2 and Randall Park (“Asian Jim”/Steve) who is always hilarious to me, especially when playing “quiet desperation” as the straight guy (comedic usage).

We loved The Residence. Hope it becomes a series-but doubtful, I suppose. Especially loved the bird-watching tie-in.

Not a bird-watcher myself, but several close relatives have been, including my blessed mom, and I suffered from being dragged along, since I woulda rather be reading and my eye-sight was poor. Finally occurred to me to nominate my younger brother, who wasn’t a reader and sight was excellent

We’ve been watching the four seasons of LONDON KILLS, starring Sharon Small as Detective Sergeant Vivienne Cole, Hugo Speer as DI David Bradford(who has to be one of the most ineffective Detectives in the Metropolitan Police and not in a comedic way. His inabilities often have tragic results) and Toni-Allen Martin as Detective Constable Billie Fitzgerald.

I’ve complained on this thread that many British mystery series build to a climax after 4-6 episodes, which as a Law & Order and Vera fan, one episode and done, drives me up a wall. This series so is constructed in a similar fashion-but w/ a twist. Not giving any spoilers. At least watch the first season-and see for yourself!

My wife was reluctantly watching the recent Interview with a Vampire series made in the last few years. She got hooked and dragged me in too. She thought it would be cheesy like one of the movies, but was pleasantly surprised.

We took advantage of the Prime Day two months at 99cents specials on BritBox and PBS Masterpiece. Turns out we watched all the series we had not watched in less than a month.

Wife watched the early seasons of Vera, which we had seen because she has been binge reading Ann Cleaves novels. And tonight we watched the first episode of Dirk Gently. I forgot how totally insane the Douglas Adams character was.

We watched the first to episode of the latest season of Imma Tatarianni and MHZ and are not sure if it is as going to be as enjoyable as the earlier seasons. Many of the European series we watch are long running but jump the shark pretty early in the run.

I didn’t care to much for the TV version of Dirk; but have long loved Adams. But I’ve had to stop reading his work; it started to make too much sense!

It always did to me.

The TV version is silly, but far superior to any recent Britcoms. My brother recommended Death Valley. Total rubbish as I see it. Barely made it through one episode and I wish I didn’t.

If you can find it, I recommend the BBC TV version of Hitchhiker’s Guide, from 1981. IMO, it is FAR more enjoyable than the movie version. Although I may be biased, as that was my introduction to the story, prior to reading the books or hearing the original radio program (which you can download from archive.org, or at least, it was possible in the past)

We watched DEATH VALLEY. Okay, not memorable. Had to ask the husband to prompt me because all the Britcoms(like Lake’s term) begin to run together unless really outstanding. An elderly TV star who (in the series) once played a popular TV detective assists a too clueless/naive to-be-believable DS to solve crime in the small town where he’s become an introverted/secluded retiree. He needs her, she needs him
.

No matter how trite, still better than almost anything on present American TV. With 100’s of channels available, network & cable, we watch vintage movies, Law & Order, Gunsmoke (we like to see bad-guys get their come-uppance in an hour or less); several channels w/ vintage series from the days of our youth and reruns of Blue Bloods.. And SPORTS!! I view FB season’s approach w/ trepidation.

Unfortunately, it will be on Apple TV tonight so I’m tethered to the computer. My smart TV is missing a few brain cells and won’t connect!

Amen! My wife and I will watch “Death Valley” if absolutely nothing else is on, but the DS is aggravatingly unrealistic. I’m guessing that the character was created by someone who really hates their local constabulary.

I spent a few minutes reading a story on The Athletic from their Peak desk.

" Jim Valvano’s ESPYs speech touched hearts. It’s also a masterclass in public speaking"

Then I spent about 11 minutes watching the video that I have not looked at for several years. Unless you are a sports fan – an OLD ONE – you probably have never seen this. It’s worth spending the time. EVERYONE in the room knew he was dying. Eight weeks later, he died of cancer at 47.
